Hopefully someone here is familiar the wams website, Just a question regarding the. When it comes up in purple says: road (formed and unformed). Does this mean that it is a legal road? The reason I ask is that on a recent hunting trip into the oamaru hut I decided to look it up on wams. It shows that you could (in theory) drive to within a few hundred meters of the hut. The road name is taharua road for anyone interested.
Cheers guys

Re: WAMS
Yes, WAMS is identifying a legal road. It would be legal to drive it if you are sure you are able to stay within the boundaries.
There are of course many 'conditions' that impact on driving unformed roads that should be observed.

Re: WAMS
Thanks Peter, that is a valid point. The reason I started looking into it is that DOC have made a car park at the start of poronui station and the paper road is poled as a walking track. Also on the walk out we stopped and spoke to one of the station workers who was certain we were not allowed to drive down to where the paper road ends.
Re: WAMS
we tried that aproach a many few years ago, Poronui station has big problems with poachers (as you can imagine being a big deer farm) and the paper road im pretty sure the had rights to organised with the local council? some shit like that anyway.
many of the purple roads you need to enquire about before using them as the local land owners have bought or have rights to.

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

Re: WAMS
sometimes its as simple as a google search.........
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=can+i+drive+on+taharua+road
the very first link for 'Poronui Station' has a downloadable map on it and it would seem that you could possibly drive to the end of the poled route.
I would ring the station and enquire, but be nice about it and don't start stating paper roads etc as they will just get upset.
I think Wopass is possibly right about access, I seem to recall enquiring with the Taupo 4wd Club members when I used to live there about this track/road and got a similar response.
Although in saying that, they state on their website that you can get access through the station but must remove rifle bolts before you do so

Re: WAMS
I have had a read through their site before and that map looks to me as if they might have an agreement with the council and DOC to stop access by vehicles through the station. The map states end of public formed road, so it may just be a case of a simple phone call. Will give them a ring and report back.
Re: WAMS
this subject always gets me a little hot under the collar.
If the "road", "formed" or "unformed" is showen on WAMS then it's recognised as a legal road by LINZ.
If the road had been "stopped" and the land sold to adjacent land owner it would not be showen as a road .
you can cross refence the WAMs information on the LINZ GIS website , using the primary and secondary road parcel options .
DOC and local land owners do not have juristriction over the national roading network (as much as they like to think they do!) and legally cannot obstruct access for any type of vecilular traffic , be that by foot , car , horse etc .
local councils are the designated stewards of roads and can impose bylaws / restrictions / conditions of use . These should be clearly defined in documentation however and easily accessible .
The issue that arises most often is that the actual physical road often does not exactly follow the marked route . creating a grey area in regards ownership and rights of access.
PANZ have been doing great works in regard to this issue and hopefully we will have a resolution in the near future .
Contact the local council , contact WAMS , find out what the real facts are . to many times we have found that the land owners have just got away with denining access for years and years.
However As others have said politeness / commen cutousy goes along way . But don't be bullied , remember you should not be justifying your legal right of access , they should be justifying why they are trying to denie / restrict your access.
