80 series centre diff motor- What happens if water gets in..

Post by wjw »

Hi All,

Anyone know if these can be recon'd or have one that works. Toyota want 2k for one. I have two stuffed ones, one from river water and one from salt water ( sig, looks like that TC was seized due to salt water ingress)

See pics below

Hey Bill, would this be surplus if you were doing a part time 4wd conversion? If so I know someone who may have one.

Unfortunately not in a part time conversion this controls 2wd / 4wd :-(

This is what the salt water one looks like

That kinda looks like the electric diff lock motors..... Maybe find one of those and see if any of the parts are interchangeable???

Are you talking about the CDL on the gearbox or the diff head??

The gearbox, the image you posted fom slee offroad is a centre diff actuator, the front and rear ones are slightly different, I'm hoping I can get the whole unit as my fresh water damaged one is still on the truck, don't want to take it off and find I can't refurb it.

Same internals, different casing I my understanding.

Had exactly the same problem with an 80series fifteen odd years back Bill, at that time Barry & Jeff of Clunie Automotive saw me right, and had some very good contacts for parts. May still be worth a try.

Could you mod one of those cable operated diff kits to work on the center diff lock as they seem very similar in operation... Then you can take full control and never have to worry about electrics ??

Thats been my assumption. I have used centre diff lock internals from a Hilux unit to repair a rear diff lock unit.
If you break it... build it stronger.

Ended up buying one from the uk 90gbp :-(

There is a new diff lock motor on trademe at the mo, the motor itself is the same, so if it's just the motor that's stuffed that would be the cheapest fix right now, have been told the motors are the same.

You'll need to take yours off and check the worm gear etc are all ok first though.
