wanting some help with terrano 92 auto

hi guys got a problem with my truck the temp rises up hills under load
it doesnt get to hot on the temp gauge about 3/4 just before the first of the two marks on the gauge happens up a few hills at coromandel and on the way home up bombay hill sitting on 3000rpm all the way up

am i to be worried about that temp ?? seems if the the hill was longer it would probaly keep going up maybe

on the other side of hill it comes down pretty quick back to 1/4

parts i have done since ive had it in 5 months is

new radiator (old cap)
antifrezze 50/50
thermostat
water pump with new hub
belts
vacum pipe off egr as it was smoking at lights when taking off has fixed it!

just had the trans reconditioned new bands,solinoids,drum troque converter ,seal kit. etc....

and lastley put a external trans cooler on it as well

the truck did rise in temp up the bombay when i first brought thought it was a bit hot decided to keep it and done some work on it

other than the temp its a great wagon

im thinking a crack in head maybe? whats your thoughts guys to do next?

forgot to add doesnt use water either rads always full and over flow is at the full mark 2 cheers again

How old are your oils? Maybe try a different engine oil, I find different brands effect your engine in different ways, and could be over fueling, combusting more diesel creating more heat as you put ur foot down to go up hill??

just done the oil using delvac mobil, also deisel pump was done 6 months ago got the reciepts from last owner it looks like new too.

I would put in an after market temp gauge and actually see what temps you are getting....
Factory gauges can be sooooo unreliably....

All terranos do that from my experience, i thnk its because the trans cooler is located in the radiator, is your trans cooler inline with the factory cooler? Intercooling also helps to keep the temps abit lower, and if u had a look at the teranosaurus, simons terrano, i thnk it has a sweeet aftermarket radiator which should further help the cause, but in general terms all terranos do that heating up the hills, just dont boil er over you should be sweet, as for a cracked head you are looking a different set of symptoms, such as oil in the coolant, and the car will get hot all the time quite easily, not just under load on the bombays.

Not sure theres anything you can do about it, ive done all the things you have done and mine still does the exact same thing under load up hill.

I installed a water temp gauge to see exactley what goes on, and uphill itll get close to 100degrees C, every other time it sits anywhere between 76 and 80

Wont be a cracked head, as its a common problem with D21 Terranos

Would love to know how to fix it too!

i think the only thing you could to to help is put an intercooler on it.

maybe get an egr guage aswell and see what temps the exhaust is coming out at. then you can tell if its burning hot or if its just the water not getting cooled properly.

Also is your viscous fan working properly? I hear they can get sloppy, you'll know its working because it makes a cool whining noise under load.

Mine also used to do the same thing even with new viscos hub an water pump.even new viscos did not come on full until around 3/4 temp on gauge then wouldnt raise any hotter. Not a issue worth worrying about but could look into adapting a different viscos hub that comes on earlier maybe..just a thought

Seems to be a common issue, both my Terrano and Mistral did the same pretty much repalced everything you have and never ever solved the problem so stopped trying to in the end, and just never looked at the gauge going up hill use to frighten shit out of me when I forgot and looked though

just took it for a run up some hills today and used a laser temp gun to check top and bottom hoses

top was really hot especially the thermostat housing 68-71"degress and couldnt hold it for to long

the bottom was able to hold as long as i wanted and temped at 47-51 degress when it sits for a while both hoses come close to temp

my thermostat was brand new only 4 weeks ago

one thing i did notice was the top hose was a little sucked in under pressure?


took the cap off and it came right and i topped it up with water agian

what does this mean guys

Chuck a new cap at it, that will stop the hoses sucking in. I wouldnt worry about the temp guage too much if those are the temps you are getting (as long as it dosent get right round). What temp range thermostat was put in as it should open within 2deg of that temp im guessing 70deg?

not sure just got it from partmaster gave the rego and that was it will try new rad cap see how it goes what do u think is happening with mine??

I second new cap..when the hose looked sucked in was the thermostat open or closed?..those temps are normal an obviously thermostat housing will get hot otherwise doesn't open. Keep in mind which a lot of people fail to understand is diesels are designed to run fairly hot, kill them real easy when revving while cold

ok hard to say i took it for a hard drive up the road some hills came back pope dthe hood and it was like that was only sitting for 2 mins say it was open was very warm

Is it broken?

Mine heats on hills too. Even with a big as trans cooler the trans oil has hit 125c on a hill. If you got your trans cooler through the radiator (as standard) that's going to push the temp gauge up a heap.

Whilst the temp does get up a bit it never seems to go too far. I was hauling the boat up the Brynderwyns "racing" a Hilux also with a boat trailer just the other day. EGT was on 750, Trans at 110, engine temp was maxed out and it smelled hot as hell. Still running fine now. Not sure it would have taken much more, but it was worth it to overtake the Hilux.
