Electronic ignition for 3F engine
Electronic ignition for 3F engine
Anyone know if I can convert my 3F engine to electronic ignition or even if there is an EFI conversion available? Getting fed up with replacing points and would like to improve the "underwater capability". Thanks. Dave

hey Dave,
Ive got the 3f engine, does yours chew thru the points does it???ill hav a look on th net for info on electronic conversions, not sure if they ever came out with factory efi on these, but i guess someone may have made an aftermarket kit that fits. Do you ever have trouble with the carbie being on a big angle when off-roading and the engine being starved???

Hi ya, if you can find any info it would be great. Yes, I have suffered with the carbie on a steep angle issue, hence my question about EFI. I got stuck in a deep bog at the bottom of a steep hill in a dip and the engine was gasping for fuel - good job I've got a 12000lb electric winch on the front!!
BTW, mine's an '86 FJ70 SWB NW new - what's urs?
Cheers,
Dave

Hi guys,
I used to have a 85 FJ70 & mine used to chew through the points in less than 6 months. If I didn't keep on top of it, the points would be so wrecked the thing wouldn't even start. As long as I changed the points as soon as the starting used to get a bit rough, the Cruiser used to run sweet as a nut!
I did have a bit of rough running & splutering a couple of times on very steep angles, which I put down to the carb being starved.
You can get EFI for the 3F engine. The petrol 80 series Cruisers used to run the 3F-E (EFI version) engine until Toyota came out with the 4.5L petrol six. I guess you could try & track down from a wreckers all the EFI & ECU bits & pieces to retro-fit to a standard 3F. Wouldn't have a clue as to complexity, etc though??
Cheers

Hi 3F ers,
Lumenition have a Optic Ignition replacement for 3Fs. Uses original distributor and replace points with Optic cutter and external Lumenition system, easy conversion . I fitted one 5yrs ago and hav'nt had cap off since. Seal cap with RTV ,put ventilation system through distributor good set of HT leads and my motor runs totaly under water . Fit new Carb, kit set float level to min, level .
If this dosn't work----- in my garage---- under the bench ---- is a 3FE
EFI , Electronic Ignition , engine . Just add Link com.
GET DIRTY FITZY .

Ive got a 1987 toyota landcruiser fj70, nz new, 3f engine converted to duel fuel, so i dont get the trouble of starvation on the angle.i havent been through a set of points as of yet, although my truck is very hard to start on LPG which may be a starting sign???although it starts easily on petrol. This might just be a characteristic of lpg sytems i guess.
there ya go about the efi conversion then, and the electronic ignition!Might find out how much that electornic ignition costs, any idea of the cost and who can supply it??
Cheers, Sam.

Hey Sam, I have a 2F in a 40 running on LPG (dual fuel). I run on LPG almost dedicated and have tuned the motor about 80% for LPG, so not perfect so it does still run on petrol. Your hard starting will be related to your timing, plug temp and plug gap. Mine starts first bang on LPG if the motor has any residual heat in it, three ot four cranks when stone cold. S'pose tuning depends what fuel you prefer to run it on...

Hi Guys,
I am totally new to the 4wd seen and have just bought myself a 1985 fj62 landcruiser, it is dual fuel automatic in great nick, but i am wondering about fuel consumption.
I ran it on petrol the other day for the first time and it was rough, the carbie had a huge flat spot to the point of being dangerous and it had pre ignition to the max.
It seems to run fine on gas but the consumption seems to be not so good.
I was wondering if there are any tricks i should know of to tuning and timing the engine for gas to optimise the consumtion.
cheers
