After i came down from thompsons track as i was pumping up tyres i grapped one of the shocks it was hot to hold,

Yup. The shock works by trying to compressing oil then bleeding it thru a small oriface. By product of that is heat and loads of it.

I believe thats the idea behind Having a bigger bore to aid in heat dispertion by more oil and surface for more heat transfer.

had similar on a long gravel corrugated road down south, some shocks you could have fried and egg on!! (my OME sports were warm to touch but def not hot!!)

this is where shock fade comes in, as the oil heats it thins and stops working as well as if it was colder, which then makes them ride like bum

as mentioned above this is where a bigger volume shock will last much better, although biggest isnt always best!

'Shocks being hot to hold' If you didn't burn yourself and the shocks were and still are working fine, then I wouldn't worry.

Shocks absorb energy and turn into heat, that'll be what you're feeling. I found that when the wheel is doing a lot of fast up and down strokes (rough gravel roads) the shocks on my old Escort would get really hot then start to loose effectiveness. Once they cooled they went back to normal. I suspect this is why shocks are upgraded for rally driving...

Coxsy they are dampners not shocks, they convert movement to heat, do they still work okay now, ie you dont pogo stick down the road?, how many kilometres have they done?

less than 10,000kms, no they work fine,just first time i tried to see how warm they wete gettting once off track,

You will be fine, all sounds okay, can be quite a shock when you first find out how hot they can get, years ago with sealed circuit some of the longer races you couldn't, wouldn't touch the shocks when you first came in
