This is fun isn't it....

Any advice prior to removing the timing gear, to help with fitting/timing?

Good chance to clean out inlet manifold and blank off the EGR with one of those special gaskets And clean out the radiator.

Steep learning curve here

I've had a 2.4Z petrol Pathfinder for the last 3 years, but always wanted another diesel. Bought one for the engine and bits for my Pathfinder, but couldn't bring myself to wreck it. Now I have 2 x D21 (2dr) And when I return to NZ, I'll bring one.

Why you removing injector pump? Have you a dial gauge to set timing after refitting? Would be worth checking timing before removal, so when you refit you can set the same, or advance it in hope of more power.
Check the factory service manual if you can, has all the good tips. Having inlet manifold off will give easier access

If your careful when removing the timing gear from the pump the gear will stay in place, i just marked it all incase i managed to move it, but mine went back together easy as.

I removed mine. I hated it, was worth it to fix the leaks but man not a nice job at all. I just used the witness marks from the bolts to time my pump up

Finally got it out today. that bottom braket/bolts is a sh#t.
Found the leak, the Banjoe bolt cross treaded, no filter behind either.
Now what, the body has ruined threads!
$650 for a pump here, or $1200 for an engine!

Now my power steer is leaking grrrr

Helicoils dude. Any thread can be repaired. Just have the break the little tang off after the coil has fully threaded in. New copper washers . Be very careful of swarf. Lots of grease on the tap works well. Fuel shop that's good can repair for you. Because these are common as muck here, second hand good pump costs between $50-$200. I have 2 spares just in case

Well, $1500 later, I have a nice shiney new Injector Pump.
As I was expecting to refit the old one, I had everything marked to line up when I refitted it.
Will I have to do the timing thing, and all those other adjusments? Guess I'll find out when/if it starts or not
The engine has not rotated since i removed the pump, and I marked the timing gears, so they will line up. Woodrough key will hopefullyline up the guts of the new pump....????

Yea, woodruff key to locate shaft to gear, and make sure gears are aligned (marks on teeth).
Thats the easy bit. If you look at the 3 bolts that hold pump to engine, you'll notice they're slotted.
The slots allow for rotation of pump a few degrees either way. (very much like how a distributor rotates to change ignition timing on a petrol).
If you put pump in central-ish position (it may have a factory line scribed in as a 'base' mark) it will go. But may not be optimal. Too late timing (retarded) and it won't have power, too early and it'll be rattly and potentially hard on the engine. How much leeway- sorry I'm unsure. But a lot of people (from what I've read on interwebby) seem to adjust theirs by ear/seat of pants.
If all else fails, see if you can borrow a fuel pump dial gauge to setup timing as per factory service manual.
