V6/V8 Diesel into 96 Diesel L200

Post by uptomynutsinruts »

Hi all,

I am currently looking at what V6/V8 diesel engines will fit into my 96 L200.

I am sick of having to worry about cracking heads on diesel engines and am thinking that with a V6 or a V8 in it, it will be something different and will have plenty of power without having to worry about shotgunning the head everytime I give it the message off road or up hills.

I know that I can intercool and fit bigger radiators and replace heads and all of that sort of shit until the cows come home really but as a few people on here have said "There is no substitute for cubic inches"

So I am currently looking for a diesel 6 or 8 that will fit into the engine bay of the l200 and hopefully bolt up reasonably easily, hopefully I'll keep the truck long enough to get it doen, currently looking for a house with my partner so I will have time and room to be able to modify the truck.

Any suggestions on what engines will fit? I'd love a cummins or the like, just to be able to nail it and see a healthy stream of black smoke pouring out behind me  8)
The only thing that is really limiting is the size of the engine bay. Eventually (hopefully) the truck will end up SAS and looking something along the likes of KBJJ's awesome Navara.

Cheers all,
Mike

you might need to weigh up (no pun intended :D ) all the extra weight you'll be adding to the front of the truck with that sort of conversion

as husain said, solid axle plus a diesel v8 will make it heavy as fark up front.

the disel v8 that i would recomend is a 6.2 or a 6.5 chev.

the 5.7 ones are prone to having alot of problems.

although, is it really worth keeping to a disel?

price difference between a diesel v8 and a petrol v8 is astonishing.

best price i could find for a diesel v8 was 4 grand.

why not look at a petrol v8, something like the vh41 or lexus v8, you can pick em up dirt cheap, and they are easy to find parts for. but better yet weigh no where near as much as a diesel v8.

I hear what you guys are saying, thanks for the replies.

A SAS with the bent 8 will add quite a bit of weight, but if I can get the axle forward as much as I can and try to sit the 8 behind that point, it should in theory give me a better rear weight than what I have at the moment (F%$k all rear weight)

The 4-53 looks like a real good engine 8) plus a lot of people in the states have turbo versions, sound quite good under a heavy foot 8) 8) just wondering how much it will cost to get one out here and get a bellhousing to adapt it to my box

or more suggestions...

Cheers fellas

they're a fairly tall engine. you'd just run a little allison auto, manual eaton or something like that through a divorced transfer case. they're a fairly big engine though, and most of the gearboxes that will stay together are pretty big too.
rather badass though.

if you ran a twin stick eaton like this you'd be a god.

probably more at home in something a little larger!

I'd put in a vote for the isuzu 6DB I've had a couple in diggers.... cheapest you'll get to work on as they are spec'd in alot of diggers, trucks, boats etc the one in my old 30ton digger had over 20,000 hrs with nothing other than water pumps and regular servicing done to it.... it is a tall motor tho
