Intermittent black smoke and no power - pajero 2.5t

Post by dan.c »

Hi, having a problem with the gen1 4d56t 2.5 diesel pajero. Sometimes it drives fine, and other times it will pump out shitloads of black smoke and loses a lot of power. Generally it drives fine when cold, and gets worse as it heats up, im not sure if this is coincidence or not.

This power loss and smoke happens intermittently, it will smoke for a few minutes, then clear up and drive fine, 5min later it will do it again. Today it was so bad it stalled, wouldn't start again for a few minutes.

Im thinking its a leak somewhere around the turbo/manifold etc not running the turbo and then overfueling causing the smoke, but buggered if if can see anything, intercooler piping, manifold etc all seems tight.

I swapped this engine in a few weeks ago as the original ate the turbo, ran sweet for a week or so, it must be something iv missed?

Any ideas? Thanks

Cheak leaks around turbo, my terrno was doing this exact same thing, found a leak where it bolted to the manifold.

has the engine got an egr system?
quite common for them to stick open and cause black smoke and lack of power.

thanks for the input, pretty sure its sussed, the egr valve had a hose connected to it that wasnt connected on the old engine, i had hooked it up according to a workshop manual i have. unplugged it and have had no issues since, dont really understand how a tiny little vaccum hose could affect it so much but shes running sweet now. thanks everyone!

i would block the egr system off rather than just disconnect the vac tube as sometimes the valves will stick open a tad. plating it will completely seal it off.
