Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
Hi, I tried searching, but got lazy...
I'm going to get mechanical beadlocks. I was thinking internal air, but want to eliminate sticks/mud in bead, as I rub along banks/logs etc quite often and enables me to remove/change tyres at will.
I was recommended to get the old school or original ROH rims ?? as they are thicker/stronger. Where do I get these, and is it worth the extra cost as beadlocks will strengthen rim anyway?
I've seen beadlocks with an alloy outer ring, I like, but are these a good option, whats there negatives?
Are beadlocks designed to fit/clamp a specific tyre, or will all tyres fit them?
Who do you recommend in Chch or should I go elsewhere?
Factual answers from people in the know appreciated

Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
depends on your driving style but IMO yeah definately look around for some stronger rims some of the chinese ones are pretty light and thin... having said that I've got 3 sets of beadlocks, 2x sets of 15x10" USA cragar steel rims beadlocked (same style as ROH) and 2 rims are buckled and a bit harder to ballance and the other set is a set of chinese 15x8" rims beadlocked with flipped centres that stick out further than my 10" rims and they havent got any buckles in them, could just be good luck though
all tyres have different bead thicknesses so the rings need to be set to somewhere that'll fit whatever tyre your sticking on, all mine were setup for simex and all the other tyres I've stuck on them have fitted fine
definately worthwhile going down the beadlock route you wont look back

Hi kbjj Try talking to royce clive eng down the road from your work, as they are dealing with rims and rim repairs all day long, talk to Kevin behind blacks fasteners.
Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
As far as im aware the bolt on ring type need cert, the internal ones do also as you alter the rim by drilling an extra hole for the extra valve ,also ali beadlocks cant be made road legal in NZ
Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
Just got a set of 4 made by franklin engineering for $1030 to my door 36bolt powder coated any colour .cost a extra $20 a rim as I got the locking ring a different colour.
Great service
Your more then welcome to come check them out when I get them (in the post as we speak)

Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
I think pro-comp make a heavy duty 4mm thick rim, not sure about availability in Nz though.
Steel weld on beadlocks would be my pick with an extra band welded into the inside lip of the rim.
As monstr said they need to be certed an need the 36 bolts to be certed.
Id steer clear of alloy outer rims as if they bend when youre rubbing banks an rocks etc you'll bend them an Id be worried about bending them back into shape without cracking them.

Steel is easy to hammer back into place

Did you send your rims up to him or did he supply them?

Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
That price he supplied the rims! Just your standard 15x8 steelies.was going to send up my rims but at that price will just sell the ones I have now

Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
My maths must be bad.
According to his trademe advert I get $335 per rim plus you paid an extra $20 so that would make it $355.
Four at that price would be $1420.
I think I need to go back to skool

Haha you are dead right I should have been a bit clearer he lists sets of 4 on trademe for a cheaper price.

fitting them is easy and so is stripping all the threads so be carefull who you let touch them, thats not a dig at your mate tiger I dont know who he is its just a generalisation, as far as ballancing goes take it to somewhere that works on 4wds and has the big weights if you can, all my wheels have between 400-800gm of weights on them, I gave up on all the standard tyre shops and truck shops they never seem to be interested in spending the time trying to get them ballanced up and are more interested in telling you what thay cant do

Thanks for that!yeah I will bolt up the locking ring myself.franklin redrilled holes and will use tubeless dump valves
Thanks

Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
There is also elite wheels in chch. They are really good. If i supply the rims they are 850 (for 4) including gst plus powder coating on top but they say you don't really need it as they don't seem to stuff the powder coat up too much so they just spray them. They use alloy outers but can do steel. They seem really good at what they do so go and see them Jeremy. They are on annex road. They have managed to get approval to have 32 bolt ones certed as well apparently

As far as balancing goes, You could try those tyre balance beads. I got mine balanced but as soon as I drove it offroad the weights got ripped off

Just the 6mm
Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
Buggar, just spoke to the guy from Franklin Engineering, and the price Rob got them for was a one off special that the guy did himself with a second hand set of rims.
For a set of new rims, 8mm cap screws, powdercoated is $1450
More homework to be done

I would like to see thye paper work on that ,i did quite alot of work on this last year as i was looking at bringing in some ali beadlock rims from the states ,and was told i would not be able to make them road legal i got the same answer over 32 bolt steel rings was told they had to be 36 bolt ..
Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)

Had these steel rims with Alloy rings cert'd on my 40 a few years back. man they took some beatings. I should of kept them.

Modified rims with alloy outer and 32 bolts absolutely does not meet the current requirements for LVV Cert for on road use. If anyone suggests otherwise is just plain wrong.
Read paragraph 2.3(5)
http://www.lvvta.org.nz/documents/standards/LVVTA_STD_Wheels_&_Tyres.pdf
Forgot to mention that 32 bolt rims where road legal prior to the current LVV standards being introduced. They do absolutely fail to meet the current standards.
Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
on the subject of beadlocks, is it a worthwile upgrade to go to the m8 bolts vs the m6?
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

Doesn't really matter, just unnessary weight, go see tony at speedy line, he should have sets with both kickin around there somewhere

Reality is that 36 M6 high tensile bolts (when fitted correctly) is way overkill in engineering for the stresses actually placed on the rim. Larger bolts being so close together may actually weaken the overall structure.
Re: Mechanical Beadlock Questions (road legal)
Totally agree that M6 are plenty strong enough.
But the point Sadam makes
could be a factor to consider, M8 is probably less likely to strip than M6.
Cheers
