Re: sad safari.....
Ill look in to a decent service as I have no idea when the last one was, exhaust has already been done and at The same time had the pump played with to make sure it was set right.
I'm happy with the whole slowing down on hills it's just the foot flat on a flat road trying to hold 70-80k just didn't seem 100% right to me. Ill look into servicing, injectors and clearences and let you guys know how i go cheers

Here we go againI would go with a Nissan every time over a Toyota 80 Series, most of them are at least 12k and the later model ones are a fair bit more, there are lots of Safaris/Patrols around for less than 8K, the difference in price would be enough to buy a decent turbo setup and they come as part time 4wd from factory too, so you don't have to f**k around fitting freewheeling hubs etc and Toyotas usually have highish k's too.
dude you started it, sadam related it to an 80, but then said the safas are more reliable.
got bored of searching trademe?

Re: sad safari.....
Nissan auto's are completely different from manuals especially for towing.
For over 5 years I lived in Akaroa and towed a tandem trailer with premix, sand and heavy building materials up and down hills with my manual Safari. My employer did the same with his high roof lwb Safari (manual) even pulling a 2tonne digger on a transporter out of Le Bons bay etc.
You drove them accordingly and they hauled everything without fail or overheating. My old boss recently bought another Safari to add to the work fleet....a high roof TD42 automatic. I caught up with him before xmas...he has had the new truck for 2 months and it's already booked in for a manual conversion.

Re: sad safari.....
and yes the manuel safs have a shit load of torque
its the autos that let them down, even with a hair dryer over drive is just about a non used gear

I have been for a ride in a shorty Saf with a custom turbo setup, and I can assure you it was a long way from being slow, once the turbo kicked in it was probably quicker than my old mans 4L straight six petrol Cherokee.
great another pissing contest again .................
I can piss further and faster than you.
Next comes the penis measuring contest....ive heard the rumours, my votes with you marty

Re: sad safari.....
Start with measuring chainsaws
nissans and toyotas both have their merits, depends what you are towing, have followed taz towing his beastie and the result is usually smoke and slow, have you tried draining the tank with fresh diesel and injector cleaner?, there is a wee gauze filter on the injector that needs a clean occasionally, if its an auto whats the trans fluid like? does it need a flush/fluid/ filter change?, maybe it needs new injectors?
good idea to fit an egt guage as well

Re: sad safari.....
everyones entitled to their opinions thats why we read all this shit in these forums, some people that have probably never towed a vehicle in their life seem to think they are experts and know everything about everything and want to try and discredit people that have actually done the shit their talking about and then trying to pull reasonably ballanced posts apart and take them all out of context with a delibrate intention of making a snide swipe dosent really help much end ends up fcuking close to a fist going through my laptop screen
the threads about towing with Safs and part of that discussion without sidetracking off topic is comparing Safs to other vehicles to get a performance comparison. I've had my truck towed by plenty of Safs all around the North Island and I dont have a problem being towed by them I'm more than happy being towed by a Saf any day thats probably what pissed me off mostly by that little shits snide remark
But as a comparison the GQs have all been the slowest tow vehicles with either Cruisers or other Safs hanging off the back, when we towed my cruiser back from Auck with Frogies manual GQ with an after market turbo I followed him back in my commy with all the gear and my trip meter gave an average speed of 62kph down SH1 from Auck to Wgtn it was a pretty slow trip and the hills were painfull, Stinkys petrol GU was a different story when he loaned it to me to go to costa last year (thanks stinky
) that thing towed like my truck wasnt on the back and handled and braked just the same, it drank a bit of gas but I dont think it was overly excessive on the scale of things, skiddys 12 valve 80 series has towed my 40 series and my 70 series and absolutely flew both times, possibly as much the driver as the truck but that things towing ability impresssed me
We used Jerrys auto 1KZ playdow to tow my truck to hawkes bay for gwavas a couple of years ago and it was slower than a wet week untill we pulled Jerry out of the drivers seat and blackdeath drove it, they were the first to arrive in hawkes bay and left all the other tow vehicles well behind and same coming back to wellington. Been to a few events with beercruiser towing his 40 series cruiser with his falcon and that thing always flew and cruised along with the trafic no probs where ever we went but I guess along with jerrys old 1KZ playdough there probably wouldnt be the life expectancy you'd get out of a Saf or 80 series cruiser doing long term towing. Thats all anecdotal shit I've found and my opinion and not some dreamed up shit I just typed onto the internet
its all sweet and dandy being able to tow fast but even if its slow you cant beat long term reliability
if the mods are concidering pulling the thread or some of the snarkey shit in it bare in mind that was a shitload of typing I've just done and it took fcuking ages to do

just saying that zukmeista was actually posting in a helpful informative way, thats all, until now that is..
Re: sad safari.....
Went to an auto specialist on Thursday, he said the only issue with 80's and towing is hat you need good cooling for the auto, he recommended 2 very large coolers for lots of heavy towing, ie 2.5 ton every day.

To keep you updated (I started this thread) on what progress I've had, reset the valve clearances which were a bit wide, gave the pump a bit more fuel and set the TPs up properly. will hook up the boat on wednesday if weather plays ball and see what difference it has made

good to hear that progress has been made, despite the little fest going on.
have you checked/replaced fuel filter? sometimes they can clog up pretty bad, my terrano got to the point it would just cut out but sorted it out after it was replaced.
other thing to look for is in the intake manifold, it can get pretty oily and grimey, so a clean in there could help also.
Re: sad safari.....

the law has changed now
class one full licence can now do a GCW of 6000kgs

Re: sad safari.....
ahh this post looks like fun iv been missing out
...anyway just my 2cents the patrol that i towed my terrano on car trailer has a over sized turbo blowing a mild 8psi down its ass (otherwise standard) and it pulled my truck up hill at 90+km..Was manual though don't know if much difference...Anyway my point is if you love the truck enough you will get it to perform the same if not better than others doesnt matter if its a Nissan, Toyota or even Isuzu's..even if it means dropping high performance engines in
Edit: opps missed page 3 apparently autos slower than manuals

Yeah I have my HT, but think the whole thing would still be under 6 t anyway. Inlet manifold was clean, did all the filters when I got it, along with front and rear rotors, heavy duty pads, caliper kits, front caliper pistons, drive belts, cooling system flush, all diff oils replaced, serviced trans, rear sway bar links, exhaust flange gasket, new towbar and wiring. Yup, as you can tell, last guy was a little lax in servicing

Solved my sad safari issue. bought a 2006 Patrol instead
4.8 litres of petrol guzzling power! tried it for the first time yesterday towing the boat, did it well, not overly fast, but keeping up with traffic well.

nice if its an auto fit the biggest auto cooler that you can fit, keep the auto cool and it will last forever
