Well the family and I had a fantastic time over the weekend. Another beautiful part of the country to visit and we will remember this trip for quite some time.

We started our journey on Friday evening, Wellytown to Palmy and pretty good for Friday night traffic. Settled into the Palmerston North Holiday camp, not bad and in a great location, smack bang between the Lido, Botanical Gardens and Manawatu river.

Saturday morning we roll on around to the Ashurst Domain to find Taz and Grace lazing about after a good breakfast. Now I had arrived with my three squawking children to disturb the peace :D Jerry, Gill and Aaron FINALLY arrive, just in time before my ears were to fall off from the kids asking when we are going. Jason from the Palmy crew turns up and is here to be our personal tour guide, cheers Jas, bloody good of you.

The weather is hot and hot as we roll out of Ashurst headed for Takapari Road. Up Takapari and at the main gate we have three other members to join the trip. A couple more Palmy boys and their families along with some poor bystander in his Honda CRV who just seemed to get sucked into the drive. It’s an easy drive up with a few bumps along the way, but so bloody dusty. We are tucked in behind drivers Gill, Taz, and ‘Mr CRV’. Yes that’s right, Jerry worked out he could eat more lollies with two hands, so Jill was taking the rains. Oh yeah, ‘Mr CRV’ the way you thrashed that poor little thing over the rocks, makes me think
a)You stole the car
b)It’s a rental
Good on ya, back home for a good service me thinks now.

Lunch at the A-Frame hut and time to take in the fantastic views and listen to some more bullshit :D

Time to endure another dust ride back down and head for the river to give the trucks a wash. By now we are all feeling like we’ve eating sand for lunch and a dip in the river is what we all need. We drop down onto the Pohangina river bed, just off the Saddle Road bridge for a quick break. With no rain for well over a week, the river is very low and plenty of room for a play. Taz of course must try his hand at launching the whale up the hill….alas no joy, it will be more at home in the water I think. We all journey downstream for play in the river with the kids giggling in the back as the wave of water sprays back in through the truck window. We reach our destination and it’s time to show off our swimming talents. Taz puts on his white swimming singlet and attempts the walk of the slimey river boulder with the rest of us. But we soon find the perfect spot to cool down.

Time to head back to base camp and enjoy a well deserved drink, food and good company. A few more locals join us and the afternoon is drawing to a fantastic end…..BUT wait! Lets head up North Range Road, its only a 40min round trip someone mentioned….Great idea, lets do it.

WTF 40mins+++++++ equals just over 2 hours later we complete North Range and meet up at Pahiatua Track. Al gets us all out safely, only to be greeted by a fowl mouthed local who said our lights were too bright, well don’t look at them. His mum must of taken his truck off him for the weekend, someone had the grump-on.
But what a sight across North Range, again fantastic views.

Thanks everyone for making it such a memorable trip

Cheers
