Air locker is your best bet if you dont want noises. Just curious why dont you want noises/clunking?

i take it you mean auto locker ?
if so you won't get much noise from it but handling wise you will notice it.
really noticeable when doing tight turns in carparks etc.

I presume you are talking about a Lockrite?
Have had one in the rear of my Surf for around 4 years. Was daily driver for a while. Yes you do notice them if you floor it round corners or when pulling out at a T intersection etc. Just need to wait till going straight before booting it

The cheap way is to fit an auto locker, which effectively means the diff is locked all the time. It will'unlock' when a certainly amount of torque is applied when turning. This is the clunking you will be referring to.

The best option is an air locker such as ARB which is manually selectable for locking when off road.
The best option is not the cheapest though.

On the open road you won't notice it but around town you will a bit as others have said, you need to coast around corners, this allows the rear wheels to travel at different speeds, with the power on the wheels are locked together. Need to make sure your rear tires are the same rolling radius to minimise tyre wear.

or http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=33713

or another option made by Richmond (lockright) is a Powertrax http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/noslip.html
this is the road going version of the lockright, bit dearer than the lockright, I have got a new one i was going to use but not now as have got ARB's, if interested let me know and I can work out a good price.

What he said, if you adjust driving style on road (just as you did when you took the swaybar out, you'll notice off road its possibly the single best mod you can make.

ARB is top gear, but as you say prices here are insane. Its not as if the Toyota rear carrier needs strengthening either.

If it was me, I'd buy that Lockrite from Suzolla, new cross pin, maybe side bearings. Can be installed by a proficient DIYer.

Then find somewhere paved to get a feel for how it behaves, drive accordingly.

I put Zoolmeisters lockrite in my Samurai a few months back, might be the narrower wheel base and lighter vehicle, but in dry weather I hardly ever notice it on the road, hasn't affected drivability at all. No unexpected clunks or swerving. Sometimes I will hear it clicking as I pull into a driveway. And in someways it almost makes vehicle handeling more predictable - you know that if you give it some gas out of the intesection you are going to get sideways. There is none of the 'maybe it'll happen' of an LSD.
Go for the lockrite - cheap and effective.
Not sure on the legalities of them though..

A bit of noise or a lot of extra traction, what would you rather put up with?

If you want the traction just accept there may be a bit of noise from time to time when turning, it not like the clicking noise can drown out your stereo.
Under normal driving conditions you shouldn't hear it at all.

Yeah Toyota LSD are pretty rubbish overall.
The noise isn't anything you will really hear unless you are listening for it.
In a straight line on road it won't make a noise, only when turning, when the locker ratchets to allow the wheels to turn at different speeds will you hear any noise.

If that's the way you want to go then talk to Suzolla (Tim) regard the options he has available. He provided enough links earlier for you.

I dunno about the toyota LSD's but the clutch pack Mitsi ones can be quite clunky in a tight turn. Mine makes cracking noises as the clutch slips and re-bites.
I dont mind hearing it though, at least you know it's doing it's job.
When a clutch pack LSD stops making noise it's probably worn out or needs a tighten.

I've had a lockrite in the rear of my surf, auto 1kz, for only a few months now and honestly am so happy with how it performs offroad that the alterations mentioned in driving techniques above are really pretty insignificant and will quickly become second nature to you in no time. We can only hear the clicking faintly if the window is down on tight low speed turns. I'm in Katikati end of next week aparently with it if you want to come over for a ride I can go over it with you.

I've run the original lockright in a road going 2 door surf, wouldn't have one again as there is another option which I used in the rear diff of my second surf which was a 4 door which I put a prado front end in blah blah,
I put one of these in that truck and it was really good and although more expensive was worth the bit more :!:

Anyway I sold that truck a couple of years back now run a vehicle offroad only so back to running a shitty 4 spider lockright

One of those in the rear and an auto in the front would be a nice setup
