Can you help me with Nevis track

Post by Boomr »

I'm a complete newbie to 4WD...touring with my scaredy-cat partner in a hired Prado SWB next week (Feb 2012) around Central Otago. Is the Nevis track (Bannockburn to Garston) something I could safely do? Cheers for any help

Yep peace of piss, you can do it in 2wd. Just be aware of the weather, Ive been in there in 20degree heat before and on the way out struck snow over the top. But you'll do it no problem in a Prado.

At the monment you'll breeze over. Have done it in my car a few times. Is basically a roughish gravel road with couple of small fords

Been through there in a couple of different Vintage cars over the years.

It will be a doddle!

I could show ya (if I was in NZ) a track that takes you from Nevis valley to Old Woman Range. Hard core, arse puckering, ball breaking stuff. Did it with a mate years ago, at one point he froze up with fear, I had to walk back up the mountain to drive his truck down. Whole family almost lost the plot. Don't take a wrong turn now
Which way are you going thru, if you come out Bannockburn end, you can turn left at the top of the pass and it will take you past the old water wheel and more ruins. Nice easy little track. If you turn left, you'll get on top of Old Woman Range...the easy way. Think it's all locked up through there now by DOC...someone correct me if I'm wrong please!
