I wrote an article about the 42 Traverse and how it came to be usable by 4wders and the effort that went into it.

DOC has been asking the lodge manager and pub owner and some of us locals which club was in all the closed tracks on labour weekend,they want to fine and prosecute the offenders,some parts where left impassible for DOC on their 4x4 quads,we know who it is but are not dobbing any one in, they are not local and they know who they are as they do it every year,this is going to #### it for all 4x4ers after all the hard work done by those skid has talked about.nice one guys.

Personally I vote for dobbing the bunch of tools in!

i told the ranger that contacted me that it would be some random group and not a 4wd club as they all know the consequences of such behaviour when it comes to land access,as such i will not name any club.no 4x4 club needs bad publicity.

IMO, if there are people out there who know who did the damage, and don't pass these details on, they are just as idiotic.

Any bad publicity through acts of stupidity or ignorance is more than deserved. If it was a club run, these twats obviously think they can go where they wish, when they wish. No sport needs a bad club like this.

I agree. I like clubs and all that, but if you are idiotic enough to do something like this, then you should be willing to face the consequences.

Possibly, but then you are assuming no club would do this. Either way, they should be identified so the "innocent" club can deal with the members

The way I read your post it sounded like it was a club going in there.
If it is members of a club then that club needs to know so they can deal with their 'rogue' members.
There was a thread on here very recently where a member was banned from his club for a long period due to irresponsible behaviour. A spur of the moment occurence. This is no different, it is worse really as it is more than one irresposible person and this activity is planned, and not a one off incident.
You have put this information on a public forum, which puts a bad light on us all as 4wders, (protecting our own) if we allow this type of activity to continue.

I agres, if an innocent club's name is being used by a few rogue members for personal activities, then the club has the right to know. It seems you are now trying to pretend you know less than how much you actually know.

It would be better if you let NZ4WDA know through email what you know. Let the Association deal with it appropriately.

Got a day off monday and away over wknd so was thinking of doin a solo run thru here. Anyone been through lately? Would be in a stock swb paj with 31 muds no winch.

nice write up about the 42nd traverse skid. Dani's (my wife) late father was the head of forest and bird from 89 to 2000 so was most likely the one at the meeting. He grew up in owhango so no doubt it was a very 'dont f with my home' project for him.

Cameron, the vegetation is still 'close' on the southern end and does generate some pin-striping effects. Auck 4WD went through in January.

To fix the overgrowing vegetation will require a significant effort. 25 people in November cleared 6 km at the Owhango end over about 12 hours and there is probably three times that distance to cut back still.

I recognised some areas that were cut back about 5 years ago and now need it again, so if some program was established to cut back annually, the route could be divided into 4 sections with one done each year.

You'll be ok providing you have a good level of experience and you take it easy. I lived and worked in the area for 5 years and have done the 42 more times than i can remember but the moment you let up respect for the track it'll bite you!

rofl, chickened out and spent half the day pulling shrubs out with a rope instead

is very dry in there at the mo, been no substantial rain for 6-8 weeks,we have been in there digging some drains and cut outs to keep the water off the track when it rains next,still got some digging and a short subsoil drain to do by the blown up bridge,is easy to do solo but not the best idea in case you have a break down as the cell reception is patchy in there, and i doubt a cyclist will double you out .also we have a complete fire ban in the greater ruapehu area so please be careful when cooking or smoking in there,if you do go solo pm me and i can give you my contact #.

Did the traverse with my dad in Dec 2012 , awesome scenery. helped a couple of people on bikes get up one of the steeper sandy sections. Brilliant day lotsa bush pinstriping but no worries. Will do it again when I'm down that way if I have time.

we share the track that's the agreement , unless they changed the rules,
but peter varey would know about it,
maybe sign is for side quad track and put in wrong place

DoC should have removed or covered that sign for the summer months but with their ongoing 'restructuring' the person responsible is probably not aware the sign exists. A note has gone to DoC.
