Dual battery ?`

Post by Kezza »

Hey guys, looking at installing a dual battery set up in my 94 surf. Since its a petrol there isnt alot of room in the engine bay. My question is, can I install my second battery in where the spare tire used to be mounted under the truck (now on tailgate) ? The only thing im thinking is, will it get too wet crossing rivers? Can I put it in one of those battery boxes ?

If your going to put a battery under there the only battery you could fit is a sealed orbital battery then you could place it on its side also

Biggest issue with it being so far away is you would need a massive cable to connect it to the other one as would be huge voltage loss ...probably be easier to just have 1 battery but find a much bigger one to fit in the existing space.

A mate of mine has done this successfully on an 80 series cruiser. Has worked fine for a few years now but as posts above say, it is a sealed orbital/optima type battery and needs big cables to prevent volt drop over long cable runs. His is mounted in a custom steel box just behind rear axle.

Cheers

Mmmm... I wondered about this, but am giving it a go anyway. Time will tell. Two 720cca lead acid battery's with 75mm2 cable to engine bay

 I don't change my battery's if they go flat, I charge them, or jump start it via terminal under bonnet where winch, starter etc connects

I did this, but them both in behind my seats, they take up a bit of room there is the only downside...
