suzuki diff
i know there are lots of posts on here about the steel diffs but i just want to confirm what i have read, if i unbolt the diff housing out of a grand vitara (2000) it will bolt straight up to my mounts(v6 1995 swb escudo) and the ratios will be the same with the same side gears
Re: suzuki diff
from what i have been told there are several different things not just what year Gv it is out of, it may not fit. Right the guy at Te puke parts world, hes pretty clued up. He is on here aswell just cant remember his username, someone else may know

Re: suzuki diff
From what i'v heard, the housing will bolt up, you may need too bend one of the housing mount bracket's to make fit ?
But the carrier is another story.
You want the carrier or third member from no higher then the 2003 model as the carrier mounts changed after that year, So you should be good with the 2000 diff....
There's a bit of info here:

Are you in the process of converting to a steel front diff ?

Re: suzuki diff
Oh as for the diff ratio, there not the same, i think the Grand Vitara may shear the common 4.875 in some of there model's.
I'm guessing here, but id put money on the Grand Vitara side gears being 26 spline like your V6.....
Like "BlakeJ" said, if you can track down the guy from Te Puke parts world he will know the in's an out's of these diff's
I'm just like you in the fact that i'm learning this stuff as i read more an more about it.

Re: suzuki diff
Chairman is right about the side gears being correct, the difference is that the gv's have a higher oil fill point and a vacuum free wheel front diff. The shaft lengths on the outputs are different as the diff is more off to the right but unless you have all the gear for the vacuum disconnect it's not useable as you can't provide drive to the front wheels. Best thing to do it use the centre from your diff then everything should bolt up. The one I got was 4.875 ratio and it bolted straight into mine but mines a little odd as its a factory 2.5.
Re: suzuki diff
Xl7 banjo fits too right?
The 3rd member from the xl7 is required too?
Is everyone doing this conversion using a rear samurai steel head, or the steel head from the donor car?

Also It would help to know which third member mounts work, and which don't.

Re: suzuki diff
Yeah use the whole front diff assembly from an XL7. I've heard of the Samurai diff head conversion but you have to attach a mount to it somehow.

That is any first generation XL-7 up to 2006?
The XL7 parts are all a direct swap? Can the Vitara parts be used in the XL7? My wife is keen (this week) to buy an xl7
This link describes the use of the samurai 3rd member housing.

And this one shows the difference between the r&p on sammys and vits.

Re: suzuki diff
gotta laugh at some of the miss infomation in this thread.
heres what has steel front diffs
1994-1997 TD31 Deisel Manual Vitara/Escudo 4.3:1
1998-2005 shape TD62 2.5 V6 Manual grand vitara/grand escudo 4.3:1
1998-2000 TD32 2.0 RF Deisel Grand Vitara Manual 4.3:1
2001-2005 TD82/TD83 Peugoet powered Grand Vitara Manuals 4.1 and 3.9:1
I have seen 1 XL7 manual which had a steel diff in it, other XL7 manuals i have seen have had alloy diffs in them.
as far as ratios are concerned.
2.5 V6 autos, and 2.0 J20a petrols have 4.875:1
J20a manuals according to suzuki have 5.125 diffs, yet i have only ever seen 4.875's..........
1.6 grand vitaras are 5.125
so there you have it, the bottom line from "that guy" at Te Puke Partsworld.

Re: suzuki diff
Interesting, looks like you have to poke your head under and have a look at the diff colour before you buy that xl7 to make sure its a steel unit. So its mainly the diesels and manual 2.5s that have the steel diffs. Funny as I thought it was the xl7 that had them!
Re: suzuki diff
the 2002+ diffs can be used but they you need to get the mount that goes from the side of the head to the chassis cross member as they bolt to the head differently.

She bought the xl7 anyway. Has aluminium front in H27. Bit of a relief actually that I don't have to decide between robbing parts from wife's car or spending $ on another one.
