Need advice on turbo

Post by Evo88u »

My mates surf has a 2lte in it, just today he noticed the turbo all of a sudden started to sound like a jet plane. We took of the air intake and found the turbo has some chips out of the turbine Can he still drive with it like this ? Or how do you fix it ? Can post photo if wanted. Any help would be great

no it stuffed. find another turbo.
hopefully no big bits of the compressor wheel have made it into the motor.
and don't drive it. the compressor wheel will fail completely and it can destroy the engine.

What ever is going to be cheapest? From looking at it you just undo a few bolts and diss connect the water feed. But too put it back in do I need some exhaust cement to seal or anything?

Second hand of course going to be cheapest but make sure you check it over good especially the bearings! Oil lines. And yes either a new gasket or make your own with gasket card or use some good old exhaust cement.

little bit fiddly getting the turbo out but nothing major.

the turbo is repairable but will need new compressor and housing. cheapest way is to get one off another turbo.
most of theses turbo's are well worn and probably in need of a rebuild. unless you find one that been done already. unfortunately they are fairly expensive to rebuild to.

no sealant required but new gaskets will be needed.

no i wouldn't drive it or even start it with the turbo like that.

Chinese turbo's are cheap but mine lasted 6 months. others have had no problems in years.
cheapest way is a 2nd hand turbo and hope its ok. if its not rebuild it.

jump on e-bay. good plce to get parts for turbos. Even if you get a second hand turbo you should put a kit in other wise iy might just be a waste of time. They only $150 or so on ebay

I have a turbo in Auck. I was going to use it to rebuild my one until i pulled mine out and found the housing and manifolds were cracked. (my turbo had the same issue with the worn turbine). Unfortunately i cant tell you exactly what truck the turbo is from as it was used on a Toyota Altezza (not for long lol), I was told it was a Toyota CT20 turbo.
The problem with re-building is that when you replace the shaft and turbines it will need to be sent to a specialist to get balanced which is why i bought this one with the intention of just changing over the manifolds. There may be others here that can tell you what is required to do this.
It is in really good condition and only cost me $65 so you can have it for that if you are keen.
Once you have fixed the problem make sure you check your air filter. the one in mine is very coarse so does not stop small dust particles getting through (most probably ok for around town but not out of the city) this is why the turbines get stuffed. Make sure you replace it with a good filter or you will have the same problem later on.
