Newbie to here and 4x4

Hi to one and all.
I felt that I should attempt to introduce myself and my reasons for joining "Offroad Express".

I grew up in the Far North where my parents owned a farm which went down to the 90 mile beach. This was back in the days when the Mangamuka Gorge was still a metal road. Mind you most of SH1 North of Auckland was a metal road as the harbour bridge didn't exist then.
As a young person the 90 Mile Beach, Ahipara, Hohora etc were my play grounds and I grew up surf casting around the North. We used a VW on the beach, light and easy to push when stuck in sand. An uncle who was an agricultural contactor had a couple of Wilies jeeps he had brought after to war. We would use these to access those extra difficult to get to fishing spots such as way past Reef Point. They were very impressive in soft sand.

I still surf cast and rock fish and that is the main reason for getting recently purchasing a 1993 Isuzu Mu. It enables me and friends to fish areas that I wouldn't normally be able to reach. I haven't any experience with 4x4 and have found this site valuable for tips and ideas so that hopefully I wont get myself into too much trouble. A couple of weeks ago we came across a couple of fishermen on the North side beach at Port Waikato who had got their 4X4 so, so stuck. The front wheels where under water in a hole and only one rear wheel was touching land. It took 2 of us in 4x4s to get him back on hard sand.

Personally, I'm getting a bit too old to do hard walks to fishing sites but would be interested to hear from others heading out for a fish. I live in the 3 Kings area of Auckland. I'm retired and can sort of do much as I please now.

Welcome to ORE as you said there is alot of great information weather it is fishing, hunting or of course 4Wdriving.

Anyway nice choice of 4WD, the Mu is somewhat under estimated which makes it different to the rest, I own a 1997 Isuzu Mu, a great SWB truck I think.

We did try rimmers but it was closed so had to go back down to the golf course entrance. Tragic events at Muriwai during the week. last weekend I headed down to The waikato heads on the northern side. caught 4 good schnapper but the Kahawai were realy taking pilchards. In an hour I had filled the chilly bin with big fish in lovely condition and all full of roe. some of them were too long for the cilly bin. May go back again this weekend as I have a large extended family who are crying out for more fish.
