Im running Dobinson and Ranchos. Im real happy with the ride and having the adjustable shocks makes a HUGE difference on and off road. Stiffen the rear right up when towing the boat stops the arse end kicking around and you can adjust them to suit the speed you plan to drive on rough terrain, creature comforts i guess.

Yes change oils.. Look for metal in old oil.. Could have a bearing going... Transfercase can do this on output bearing amongst other things.

Hey Calvin, flushed the rear diff oil. No signs of metal and it looked nice and clean. The noise is still there... It's really hard to pinpoint. It could even be the turbo at low RPM. Or the transfer case like you mentioned... any tips ?

Only slightly, you should get castor correction bushes (not plates) for anything above standard though

The A340 in some variants do have a reputation of blowing a sprag clutch.
Mostly in the boy racer / drag racer fraternity.
The fix was to use one from the later A340 used in the Supra as its bigger.
I dont know whats in our Diesel variant...

Thanks, I've been through those troubleshooting guides. They are good but would suggest I have 2 problems! :( :( :(

I'm not sure what version of the A340 trans I have ?

I'm also going to do the rear main seal when/if the box does comes off. Thought that might be a good idea to get it done at the same time.

Yours is probably an A343F, it will be written on a plate on the firewall. the Internals of the gearbox are pretty much the same, the differences are in the transfer case and how the auto & transfercase are controlled

The PTO unit bolts onto the transfer case. The Prado's don't come out std with a PTO winch so you need to add a gear inside the transfercase.
That said I believe the surf has the rear diff / drive shaft in the center ?
The Prado transfercase and drive shafts are off set to the drivers side.
So while you could fit a 2lte box with its transfercase from the Prado into the Surf the drive shafts wont line up.
