Alternator rebuild

Post by FORGE1 »

Does anyone know where I need to go to buy the bits to rebuild the alternator on my safari. Is been slowly dying over the past month and its getting worse.

The other option would be to buy one of those new ones off trademe I think they are from off roader if anyone uses one of those that could provide some info.

Cheers ray

I've just bought one of those off roader alternators, can't report much as mine off road only truck & I'm still repairing it from the last adventure. All I can tell you is that looks the part, fits & charges. Worth the risk for $250

any auto sparky should be able to sort you out with bits, but in saying that most of the nissan hitachi alternators I have had off and apart usally the rectifier is stuffed, and generally not worth repairing..

Auto sparky for brushes, and saceo for the bearings. (prob need the old bearings unless someone can give you the numbers)

Whats it doing? It could be the rectifier as mentioned above and makes them not worth fixing.

Brushes and bearings are pretty simple.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

Ok sweet. Umm its only charging at the 24v line then all of a sudden it will go up to full charge (just over the 26v line) and sit there until you turn it off again then it will go back to the 24v line..

Just got back from Auckland and all the way down and around town it was normal then when we came home it dropped volts and sat on the 24v line all the way back.

Some days it will sit on the 24v line for 10-15sec then go to normal. The charge & water in the diesel light on the dash come on sometimes when on idle and go away with a rev. would this be related?

I checked the water in the batteries and they are all good and only a couple of years old so would assume its not them (I have nothing external hooked up to them).

Yeah sounds like the alternators on the way out and by that description could just be brushes or the regulator

Hi all finally got around to getting this sorted.

Got new brushed fitted. They tested regulator and said its sweet.

Pulled alternator apart to find oil filled in the back of it and looks like its been like that for a long time...years.

One of the copper bits that the brushes get charge off was shaved down front the oil and looked like chrome steel. Don't think its meant to look like that but proceeded to install and fit.

The word that springs to mind with the previous owner is neglect!!!

Broken wires etc were the start of my problems, thus fixing them eventually I hope.

So after a few hours (more like 5hrs) I had got it all in and wired up again (basically putting new ends on the wire) went to connect the batteries.....

BANG!!!

Blew the alternator fuse and almost caught the battery on fire

Anyone got any ideas? I installed the brushes and reg the same way it all came out and I'm at my wits end with working on cars At the mo.

Is probably worth getting a new alternator but then what if its something else I missed.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheer
Ray

Sounds like you may have got the insulators incorrect for battery stud in the alternator and the stud is shorted
