SAT tyres

Post by jagni401 »

Gidday,

I'm thinking of putting some old SAT tyres on my hilux. Just wondering if they wear really quickly on the seal and if they tend to let go in the wet?

Cheers

I have used them before, didn't seem too bad in the wet, can't comment on the wear though as they were only weekend tyres. They are really good on hard slippery ground like clay because they bite in good compared to a wider tyre.

Yes and Yes

also watch out for the ply rating if your looking at old retreads I used to run 825x16 SATs 20 years ago and being a standard light truck size case I ended up with a few pretty stiff 10 and 12 ply cases that were useless for off road you could get a punture and they still wouldnt go flat :x

It really does depend on how they have been stored, if they have been stored in a nice dark shed since new they will be fine, but if they have been left to dry out in the sun of course that will affect the performance greatly. Due to their age most of them are all perished and dried out so they aren't too flash on road, but if you can find a good set that have been properly stored they are fine.

Another thing to consider is retread vs non-retread, the original Firestone SAT's are awesome, the later retreads not so much. Also everyone seems to think all 7.50x16 tyres are SAT's, but they aren't.
Here are some examples of FIRESTONE Super All Traction tyres.
