Hamboy's Terrano

Post by hamboy »

So its about time I started a build thread for the terrano
SANY0116.JPG

It already had the body lift and 31s on it
SANY0366.JPG

SANY0367.JPG

It looks somthing like this now.
The mods ive done so far are:

3inch intake with custom pod filter housing
Airflow Snorkel
2.5 inch turbo down pipe
EGR totally removed including the intake butterfly housing
16psi (ish) boost
More fuel
32x11.5x15 Maxxis Buckshots
PRS and CB Radios
Big sound system
L.E.D lights everywhere

Please dont hesitate to ask if you want me to elaborate on anything

So the next item to add will be the heavy duty/2wd steering system
I got myself a second hand steering box (cheers passengerpete) and proceeded to turn it into an idler arm.

I removed the worm drive and piston.
Then removed the pitman arm, rotated it 180 degrees and refitted.
Made a cover plate and filled it with oil.

DSC00029.JPG

Very easy to do, only took about half an hour
Will fit it to the truck when the other steering bits arive

Cheers

Looking sharp, how do you find the 32's?
Any rubbing there?
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Thanks, I need to look at doing the power steering for the idler arm too, but first I need to scrounge more bits.
I asked about the 32's as mine are 33's and rub even with 2&1/2" SL and 2" BL and front guards trimmed. I will downsize to 32's when they wear out.

Looks great man, love that style of snorkel. I want one from trademe but they want damn near $500 for one!

Cool choice on the tyres, the agile Terrys are much more suited to a tall & skinny. I hear Buckshots are quite heavy, but OEM CVs are tough and this is well within their limits.

And the 2wd/idler mods you will have a really reliable & capable setup.

Good work again!

I had one of those snorkles on my Ranno but took it off and went for a steel one. Steel gives you a much better air flow and there is no dramas with the guard section of the plastic one parting company as happened with my one. The joining section is very short where the two parts join. Steel ones are available pre bent at a much cheaper price, from autobend in Chch.
Here is mine embedded in this post. http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=23250

Looks good. Whats the sticker on lower of rear doors?
What year is it? Its got the older style grill on it, I reckon they look good tho.
Same snorkel as what I've got. They're a nice fitment, just got to be wary as they sit quite high. I got mine S/H to save coin

Oh dumb. Now I realise if I click on picture it comes up larger, and can make out more details... Not the grill I thought it was, and can make out the sticker clearly...
Good to know its an 89 tho - just to confirm wikipedia being wrong.
A facelift occurred in 1990 when the 4-door model arrived.

I was sure 4doors were made pre 1990. Maybe not available overseas tho.
Different conversation tho...

I managed to locate some enthusiasim to go out to work and pick up a die grinder to make the nessasary adjustments to my new idler. Turns out it was far easier than i thought, took about half an hour to to chew both holes out and flush off the casting.

Work has been doing its best to get in the way of progress, but there was some success over the weekend.
Drilled and taped adjusters.
Used a 16.5mm drill bit and a handy lathe.
Photo0293.jpg

Bit of effort required.
Photo0294.jpg

Finished product.
Photo0295.jpg

Also managed to throw in the rear lift kit (cheers lax2wlg).

Very nice, loving the idler.
Still got rear sway bar on? Rip that off and those OME shocks will give you an extra 2" or so of travel.

Update time. Have spent alot of time out on the tracks trying break stuff and only managed to stuff one auto hub. So the auto hubs are in the bin and i have got me some Force manual ones.

The steering system handled the abuse well . Also thought it would be a good time to give it a service since its a bit overdue. Coming next time broken CVs

Did some forum trawling last night and found a solution to my little tow hook problem, so with a plan in mind and a day off up my sleeve I set about finding some steel and some bolts.
All I ended up doing was fitting a bit of 50x75x6mm angle between the factory hook mount and the tie down point, and bolting the new hook through the angle and the tie down.

Just put a rated shackle through the tow bar tongue, it has a pretty meaty tow bar on it though.

Had a good weekend with the truck, went for a run up raglan range on Saturday and played in the mud and rocks at Mt Reiley on Sunday. It went far better than I ever thought, finished up with no damage even after doing some pretty extreme tracks.
Today I started on the onboard air system, got a good deal on a small compressor so I started striping it down and looking for some where to put it. The electrical side is all done just got to plumb it up.
Photo0319.jpg

I think the warranty might be void now

After a bit of head scratching I now have onboard air :D
Photo0324.jpg

It went together easier than I thought, took a while though.
The wiring side of it was fairly easy, ran a wire from the battery to one side of the original pressure switch then out the other side to a switch in the centre console and then down to the pump.
The plumbing took a bit to sort out but basicly I took the large low pressure hose, cut it through the rubber section and clamped to the inline oiler.
Photo0323.jpg

Then cut the nut off the small high pressure line, flared the end a bit, attached the rubber hose and ran it to the tank.
Photo0322.jpg

Photo0320.jpg

Photo0321.jpg

The pump at idle will fill the tank in under a minute and pump up four 32"s in about three minutes.
The winch is next, just have to get a bar sorted for it

Update time

Have been out using it

So I figured sunday was a good day for maintenance. Starting with the lack of handbrake, so I ripped the drums off to see how bad the shoes were
IMG_0109.JPG

Fortunately I had some new ones on hand. While I had the wheels off I refitted my L/R mudflap that keeps escaping , then resealed the front hubs that were letting water in.
Also manage to buy some new toys
IMG_0105.JPG

And made a $3 shovel holder
IMG_0107.JPG

IMG_0108.JPG

And my new (ish) mats arrived (cheers will I am)
Just need to give them a bath and they'll be sweet

Update time again.

Got me a winch  it was too cheap to pass up
IMG_0154.JPG

And managed to get my hands on a winch bar that was also too cheap too pass up
Fitted them up last weekend before the southern safari but didn't get the winch working (not that it was needed), so spent the day today getting it all working.
IMG_0168.JPG

IMG_0169.JPG

The solenoid is only a temp. fitment until I get the dual batterys finished. It all works really well, im not a big fan of the 3 to 4 second delay in the wireless remote though  . Also still need finish the top braces for the bar.
As for the damage from two days at manuka island, I've managed to wreck the r/h manual locking hub, looks like water got in through the knob and stuffed the bearing, Also somehow snapped two cap screws off the l/h one :?
IMG_0170.JPG

And broken my third speedo cable .

Was a good weekend though, everyone had a blast (and that was just day one for them  )

Cheers
