Transmission repair around east coast of the south island?

Post by freaky930 »

Hi!

Anyone knows someone who could fix/rebuild an 1991 L300 4x4 transmission?
At least one synchronizer ring (fourth gear) has died, maybe the bearing as well.
First and second gear do some ratteling noises when using the engine break.
The oil seals need replacement as well.

And does anyone know, where to get Castrol GL4 full synthetic transmission fluid??

We are around Blenheim right now but could go further up north or down south to get it fixed...

It's still OK to drive but due to the excessive wear, there is plenty of brass residue in the oil, which blocks the reverse lock - and we loose the reverse gear every now and then :-/

Fourth gear can only be engaged with double clutching but then it doesn't make any noise.

I do have an 86 VW Vanagon, which I rebuilt last year, including an engine swap and cambelt replacement but I never done a gearbox so far.
If anyone has the tools and knowledge around here, I'm always willing to learn!!

Cheers,

Will

Have you considered just buying a secondhand gear box from a wrecker?

nah, not really
if everything else fails i'll probably do that but you 'll just never know what you get.
i opened the coverplate and everything else looked quite good.
if I had a shop, tools and time, I'd try it myself but since we're travelling right now, thats kinda complicated...
I rather spend my money on a rebuilt one, than buying the risk of wrecking it again :-/

John Lloyd does them in Blenheim from memory. Think he is in Wither Rd Extension. 5786527
