The speedo in my terrano failed a few days ago, just started jumping around for a few seconds then nothing, occasionally it will read about 20k's or so but wont go any higher.
I've nailed it down to the speedometer drive gear in the transfer case after testing cable to dash etc, when pulled the drive from the side of the case the oil that seeped out was all brown and foamy, obvious has got water in there at some stage, if i stick my finger in the hole in the case i can feel the drive gear and can move it around the shaft.
I've searched the net for the last few days to find a solution for this but can't find anything, not even an image of said gear drive to see how it engages on the shaft, question is can i replace the drive without removing box or case from truck, seems like such a big job for a small plastic gear.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

Drive is slid over shaft, using a ballbearing as a key to stop it spinning. Will require transfer removed from gearbox for proper repair. You may get away with using some sort of epoxy to glue it to shaft if there's enough access through speedo drive hole. Search fs5w71c in google images, theres a scattering of photos showing the drive, most pics are the 2wd box tho

Cheers Nath, might as well repair it properly.. can the case be removed with the box still in the truck, if so then is it just a matter of removing the end cover to get at the gear.

I'm 90% sure the transfer can be removed from gearbox in place. Drain gearbox oil first tho, or it'll go everywhere! Transfer is sealed, and only leaks when driveshaft removed (and tilted). But is easier to drain before removal. (also makes it lighter).
I'm not sure how easy it is to split the transfer case to get to the drive, it may be do-able without removing from back of gearbox, just been so long since I played with one to remember...
If all else fails, transfers are pretty cheap to buy. Its the gearboxes that are expensive. $50- 100 will get a s/h transfer. V6 and manual are different, unsure about auto-manual. Its the (transfer) input spline that changes.
Good luck,
Nath

interesting i have the same problem just on the drive on the speedo inside the car fidle arse things
Re: 1990 TD27 speedo issues
Is this a common problem for terrano's???? my speedo seems to get stuck at what ever constant speed im travelling at and it takes ages to come down to the new speed
do you think its the drive for the speedo or the speedo its self??

If its the pre facelift dash it would more than likely be bent needle syndrome. Easy fix is to pull the needle out and dunk it in some hot water and try to ben it back
Re: 1990 TD27 speedo issues
Righty-O, all sorted.... swapped the old t/c out for a second hand one with gearbox still in truck, pretty straight forward just time consuming, had it all done in two days, just one more question, the 4WD lights on the dash havent been working since I've had it, the plugs on the two switches on the case are missing and theres two wires hanging down from the top of the gearbox tunnel, one yellow and the other black anyone got any idea how they connect, I've tried joining the wires in a number of combinations but with no joy.
