KZN130 Surf NO 4WD! WTF?

Post by bronx89 »

1995 KZN130 Surf 1KZ-TE Auto.

All of a sudden 4wd has stopped working. The 4wd light won't come on at all in high or low range. Can hear an audible 'click' in the cabin when 4wd is selected and when moving from H to N to L you can feel the gears changing and engaging as normal BUT the 4wd light doesn't come on and the truck stays in 2wd.

Anyone have any ideas? Have checked all fuses and all plugs on the gearbox and front diff and can't find anything out of the ordinary.

I'm sure it must be something electrical.

Is there a solenoid or relay in the gearbox or transfer case or something that can sometimes sh*t itself and stop the 4wd from working altogether?

Any help much appreciated. Muriwai in RWD is no fun.

I think you have that ADD system which activates something on the front diff area via vacuum...
They tend to play up...
Try reading thru this... may help.

On the bottom of the transfer case drivers side there is a vac line going into a flange with 3 bolts remove that and clean the contacts. The grease they use seems to block the connection. Just need a 10mm spanner or socket or remove it.

Cheers for the prompt replies guys, turned out the hose on the transfer case had cracked and was barely on there:

Took that 'thing' with the 3 10mm bolts off and some dirty water promptly followed, not much but still a little did come out, here's what was underneath:

Before I go wiping and cleaning, what exactly should I be doing here? And is this likely the problem?

Cheers guys.

There should be an o ring to seal that. Brake clean the shit outta it, put a small amount of grease on the contacts and get some three bond or another sealant and seal it up so no water gets in there.

And cut that split bit of hose off, there should be enough to stretch down.

Yep already done, cut that split bit off straight after took pic, was perfect amount to stretch another 15mm outta it. O-ring looks a tad tired so sanded both surfaces and used sealant when putting it all back together wiped the shit outta everything in there and sanded contacts to shiny.

Truck is blocked in driveway but from what I can tell going backwards and forwards it now engages 4wd and the 4wd light also now comes on again.

Thanks everyone. Love a quick fix!

If you get really stuck, you can reverse the vacuum lines coming out of the front diff (do it up by the guard) and 4wd will be forced on.
To Boon or not to Boon.

I'm not sure when it should/shouldn't?
