Terrano slower than usual?
I hate to have my first real post a trouble shooting one but I'm left a bit stumped! It's a bit of curly one, done the petrol thing many a time but this is my first diesel so please bare with me!
Basically I have a 1993 Nissan Terrano 2.7 turbo diesel. Starts first pop, idles fine and doesn't smoke (not since I disconnected the EGR anyway). It drives fine but it's nowhere near as fast as my mate's Terrano of the same spec (although his is a year younger). Today we both fitted boost gauges and his is running 9psi, while mine is only just nudging 5psi. I fitted a boost controller and no amount of cranking it would get it to go above 6psi (and even then it only sometimes got as high as 6). I doubt it's a dodgy wastegate or turbo because it feels like both of those are doing their jobs, my theory is it's something to do with fueling.
I've replaced the diesel filter so can rule that one out. I've tried looking for that magical diesel screw on the diesel pump but before I go winding that thing around, does anyone have any other suggestions? I've got little experience with a stock one of these but I'm sure you should be able to wind a little more boost into it with a controller even with factory settings on the diesel pump. We did wonder if my mates had been tampered with but I wanna ask on here first before I start just trying to bypass an existing problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try disconnect wastegate actuator pipe (so wastegate stays shut) and try that. If it doesn't boost up to approx 14psi then you've got problems.
-exhaust blocked
-inlet blocked (airfilter is small in these)
-turbo shagged
-boost leak (you'll prob see an oily stain if you've got one)
-fuel system problems
Double check where you've got your boost gauge teed into, as it can read quite different in different places (do a forum search, its been talked about before with pictures)
Also check egr butterfly not blocking intake.
The fuel adjustment screw should really only be played with if you know what you're doing, it could wreck you engine if its done wrong. (read up on EGTs)
You mates may be faster due to different diff ratios or tyre sizes too

A lot of TD27's have a pressure relief valve on top of the intake manifold. I would remove this and blank it off.
I don't have a photo but its on the firewall side of where the crossover pipe goes into the intake manifold

Yeah I've read up on EGT's and all that stuff, having done a fair bit of work with petrol engines and tuning I'm familiar with all the basics, just getting my head around the different way things are done with a diesel. Didn't want to even look at that stuff until I know what's up with this, much better to start off on the right foot rather than trying to make power around an existing issue.

Hadn't heard of an exhaust being blocked before but being a diesel and having had a dodgy EGR system (it was sluggish, then blew a big puff of smoke before taking off the line before I disconnected it). Maybe those two things would be the first places to look.

Oh, auto or manual?
If the autos sad it can suck away engine power. Won't stop the low boost tho... My mates modified truck struggled to boost ( with wastegate shut 10psi, and just creep up to 15 on looong uphills full noise), turned out to be turbo shagged

Both are auto, both have same boost gauge and both are hooked into same hose, reading pressure off the inlet manifold. Mine reads 9psi his 5psi

sounds like a leak somewhere....
or the relief valve is poked and letting it out too early.

Turned out to be a number of issues. I worked through that list and eventually found a slight boost leak. Plugged that and got 7psi. I then attacked the fuel pump, checking the gauze on the inlet and all that, and decided just to bite the bullet and turn up the flow slightly. Not only did that fix my rough cold idle, but its given me full control of my boost which is now set to 10psi. Truck goes a loooot better. Still doesn't blow smoke so I've not overdone it. Cheers for the advice guys! I'm a very happy camper!

Was the cover missing off of the adjuster? If so it may have been tampered with before.
Mine didn't blow smoke even when EGT hit 850c.
Aluminium (pistons) melts at 660c.
Things can still turn to poo without the need for black smoke.

Maybe some one slipped a Toyota engine in while you were not looking that would caused a power loss

Could have!
The cap was in place but it had a big tear in it, so it had been off before. I didn't crank it much, maybe a 1/4 of a turn at most. I will put an EGT in there at some point cos I'd like to turn things up a little more with an intercooler and the likes but for now, things are running good so will leave them as is. Feels more like the truck "should" now.

Weird.....all the reading on Terrenos i've benn doing lately had lead me to the conclusion that they were bulletproof, seems i've been conned.
