KZJ78 Failed LVVC.- Rim Width

Post by Henry »

Hi

My KZJ78 failed a WOF because of shock mounts and the 3 inch lift.

So it needed a cert.

So off to the man for a cert and it failed on the rim width....

see

http://www.lvvta.org.nz/documents/infos ... _Guide.pdf

I need a 8 1/2 inch wide rim for a 33 X 12.5X 15.

they make a 8 or 10 inch rim....

10 is too wide for my prado.
So off to Elite wheels in chch to get a 9 inch rim from a 8 inch set I had in the shed....

Then off to the powder coaters.

And maybe a new WOF in 2 weeks or so....

We have the exact same problem with the "Stretched tyres" on race/road cars. Get the NZ distributor to make up a guide for correct fitments on your rim and you`ll be fine.

The tyres are BF Goodrich 33 X 12.5 X 15.

The real issue here appears to be BF Goodriches Rim size recomendations.

the NZ site is down but the Australian site recommends a 10 inch rim with a minimum of 8.5 and max of 11.....

And as every one know who has bought steel rims - 8 1/2 inch rims don't exsist....

Mike I sent a PM....

8.5" alloys do. I think you'll find most certifiers will be getting strict on this kind of stuff. Just covering their asses really. Not worth being dragged behind a bus

Just to confuse things a bit more, my hilux got certed on 8inch rims, cert plate turns up and it states that it has 15 x9.5 rims on it?  :?:
Question the certifier about it and he get a tape measure out and measures the complete width of the rim........... which was or is on a 8 inch rim about 9.5 inches????? Crazy????

But really isnt the point of a low volume cert in making sure that the mods you have done are safe for the vechicle being certed?
You should be able to run any realistic rim/tyre combo as long as all the other boxes are ticked? eg tyres covered by flares, fouling on other components ect.

I got cert for my ln106 with 15x10 inch rims and 35's Kumho KL's
only thing needed was a set of flexi flares and the cert guy was happy
even though the tyres were borderline sticking out past the flares, depends where you take it I guess.

like Sadam_Husain mentioned can you "borrow" a set of rubber with an 8" min reco width to achieve cert? Even though they are the ones in the firing line sounds like picking the peanuts outta poo to me... 33's are 33's arent they

Would offer to lend mine but they are fact 5.5 SJ rims with 30 x 9.5s  (like they do around corners) I guess a cert is diff to a wof

That really does sound like they are nit-picking a little too much. Not picking anything in your method here, but they would rather cert a widened rim than a slightly smaller uncut rim? Strange.
I ran my truck for a good few years with 33x12.5s mounted on standard 15x7 rims, used to be a little slopply on corners but no major drama

Yaaa

finally passed cert and got a wof.

After fitting the rims I looked at the flares and thought . He will fail me now because the tyres are out side the rims.

So i went the Bunnings Garden edge way and $35 dollars later all ok.

I did get a fright when he said that they normally need a photo of inside the rim before it is painted..... So do that if you are getting a rim modified....
