Wtd /WTB : Strengthen GQ front Diff housing

After this weekend, My Safari has alot of negative camber.
Closer look, found the swivel ball ends of the housing are bent.


Who can I get to do it for me ? Have spoken to 2 different Diff shops, and both made it sound too hard basket / not keen to do it incase it warps.

I'm in Auckland, but if the price is right, I won't mind freight, if it works out better for me in the end.
( as in if someone has strengthend diff for sale).

Will my CVs / CV shafts be ok to swap over along with my diff head into my next housing ? ( TB42 and Ratios).
Has anyone had / heard of problems using CVs and Shafts out of a housing that has been slightly bend ? .
Vehicle Drives ok at the moment, But Leaky Axel seal
(I had replaced this seal 6months ago and only leaked after this issue)

It's not hard to do, could shave the bottom at the same time.

Death Inc : I work in South . Live in East Auckland.

I'm wanting to strengthen it as much as possible with out going over kill ($$) , As Nismo26 said, shaving the bottom of the diff head would be good to do while it's out.

to manage the warpage you make up a jig out of some old scrap to support everything and tack the housing and swivel balls to it before you start welding all your trusses and gussets it keeps all the important parts in the right place while its being welded :D

Was it KBJJ that uses an old I/H beam to help out with that when he was strengthining his diff? think its in his build thread.

Yeah, chain ends of housing to I-beam with enough room to get a bottle jack between. To check which way to tweak housing, I used an old 2 spider open centre diff with spiders and crown removed, spun two bushes up and fitted to diff centre (where axel enters centre) that suited a piece of bar I had. This way you can spin the bar checking it for true.
If you break it... build it stronger.

Superior brace kit said 25mm at a time wait till cold weld somewhere else on the diff, did mine that way easy

same applies on welding panel steel aswell, staggering the welds is very important to stop warpage.

but as your looking at someone doing it for you, id try DEATH_INC, he seems to know his stuff.

I'm sure I have a jig just like the one you've explained there Jeremy :lol: :lol:

Me too, and to top that off, I believe Jezza even made the said bushes to keep the bar turning. If Photobucket still worked I could even show you some pics of how it is done..............

Rockhound : Pictures say a thousand words ! , Wouldn't mind one or two, just to get my head around it ,and for furture reference 8)

I Do weld ( Mig) but just finding time, and a decent bench to set it up. (working 6days sucks, and Don't want to spend any more time at work more than I have too).
Hardly had any time to even find a front diff , (Well there is one, but I'm trying to get a deal) .

What I'm not sure about is , some are saying get a Jig (which I agree with) then Coxsy has done it with 25mm worth of weld from one side to the other ( sounds like the propper (long) way) but it's another way that works :idea: .

I'll try Death Inc and some of the other PM's I've got, once I find me a diff.

Will I be ok to reuse my Shafts/ CV's and diff center ok??

I've had to keep on driving my bend diff with approx negative 6 digrees of camber ( I've put some shitty road tyres on)
and so far so good, no noises from shafts CV's ...
Can anyone X-ray my shafts once I remove them ? :mrgreen:

i stuffed mine after going a bit fast up a bank, when the front hit the ground it put about 2 degree negative camber both sides. still drives fine, except swivel bearings are buggered. still looking for a replacement.

Can anyone X-ray my shafts once I remove them


X-ray is not the best method for looking for cracks, better to do a fluorescent Magnetic Particle Inspection, as this is very sensitive for looking for fine surface cracks. Will easily find cracks that an X-ray will not see, also much cheaper to do or get done.

Suzolla . Thanks for sharing that with us mate, that's something new to me, cheers .

Just to let the guys know. I ended up going to Y61 Setup diff on mine.
Worked out best for me, and I got to say the size Difference in the CV joints is pretty good :shock:.
I havn't strengthend it, as I wanted to get it back together asap.
Hope this one lasts longer :lol:
