Thought it was bout time for an update.. of the sorts..
Most have probably worked out Im looking at heading towards an auto by now  and so Ive been pottering around in the garage now for a few days or so
Started by removing the tail section of the 1UZFE auto I acquired for 50 bucks 8)
Image
had to grind off the little tit thing as I didnt have a long enough socket, once that was done I unbolted the tail section like so
Image
Now the fun bit started..  I measured, then measured again.. and then took the plunge, as Im not mech or engineer I just got my ol trusty grinder and hey presto.. this fell off
Image
Now toyota being toyota.. I thought surely not.. but hey it did, bolted this on..
Image
As you can see from the pic the coupler is sticking out a wee bit far.. so out with the grinder again as I dont have a lathe..
Image
and then slipped it on, worked out great, I then had a spare casing floating around so just for mockup bolted that on
Image
then started to assemble the xfer as normal
Image
Now I have a small problem but not huge as I can just get my grinder out again to fix it.. But the output gear is sticking out too far, not engaging the gear as a whole so.. If anyone has one the measures around 10-13 mm on the seal side , can I grab it?
Here is the pic
Image
The rest seemed to bolt up nicely so Im going to go with that.. Not going to just yet as all the good bits are on the truck now..
There is a bit of play in the output shaft bearing and apparently I need a shim or too.. ?? 2.32mm I think( if anyone has a spare of those?) as it will stop the in out difference and make things seat nicely..
Next thing to do is take the pump out of the auto and physically check if I can swap some gears over from another box I have  to make it better for offroad.. Only way I can work this bit out is by stripping both boxs  and Im not looking forward to that..
The PTO side of things should work out bloody good as it's all bolt on..
I may need to make my front driveshaft longer and the rear shorter but havent measured any of that yet.. so you know.. little steps..
Thats it for now..
cheers K

Now once I did all of that.. I had to retro the sensor from the old tail section to the new one  .. how the fark was I going to do this.. I pondered this for a few days looking for imspiration.. and then It came to me.. I filed a little area to make it flat next to the old sensor as this was the most logical place for it..and then drilled a hole to suit it.. like so
Image
Had to make sure the 4 pronged sensor pickup was where it should have been, you can just make out the shiney bit..
Image
You can see the old and new holes for the sensors here and I'll be filling one up with some durafix as it was cheap enough..
Image
I'll put a new o ring on the sensor when it gets installd last time.. so that side is going to work great now too.. fingures crossed..
I did all the work using either my battery drill or the grinder.. to save some coin..  I know it should have been done on lathes and in a drill press but I thought fk it.. I can do that.. works a treat..

Also need to mod valve body etc.. anyone have info about that?

IUm trying to keep as much of the wiring and ecu side of things so the tranny works seemlessly really.. if someone has some really cool mods to make, then hola..

make sure you drill and tap the hole in the bottom of the trasnfer adaptor into the gearbox, leak like a sive once the powers applied if you dont apparently...

also make sure the sensor doesn't hit the 4 prongs - i had to space mine a little so wouldn't touch. im guessing your gonna run the auto ecu to control the box seen your keeping the sensor?

Yeah the 9inch grinder makes short work of the output shaft but my trick to start grinder was, start grinder - reset tripped circuit breaker while grinder still spining while holding trigger and away the grinder went. the bloody grinder drawed more than the 160a welder on start up and kept tripping garage

kzj78 gear measures 15mm on the seal surface, you might have to pay for some machining after getting away with that grinding

Ok update time.. Been playing with the autoz... sooo many bits..
anyway pulled the lexus one to bits.. just for shits and giggles..
Image
and the donor box.. :?: not going to say.. Soo many bits..
anyway thought they looked like it was going to be a straight swap of the gears etc.. so it will be shorter geared as the lex auto is reasonably close geared and same as the LJ71/78 but with shorter xfer gears.. sooo I thought if I can get lower gearing in the auto it'll help overall.. and you know. I can
Here are some differences between the lexuz and donor..
Donor
Image
Lexus
Image
and side by side
Image
sooo this raises some questions about the brain going to run it.. :?: simple solution there.. swap the internals into the lexuz box and keep all the sensors from the lexus so the ecu running it wont know what Ive done and it'll just do it's thing..
Soo I need a gasket set for the 30-41LE and I think I'm going to get the kit that kbushnz got to spice things up a little.. Also have spoken the a trans company up north and ran what I was doing past them and they said.. sweet as.. send up the bits and we'll sort it..
So I get a lower geared tranny.. bullet proof torque convertor and all runs on factory ecu.. 8) legend..
I'll be sorting out some manualisation when I get it all together..
Here are some pics of the auto in bits for ya die hard pic fans
Image
and this one is the unit together when all the bits swapped bit missing one sensor ring.. but that will just get zipped on there when Im ready  you can see the main shaft in the pic on the right..next to donor shaft.. 10 points to who guess's what it is..lol
Image
Ill keep ya'll posted when I do more.. but things are coming along nicely..
Cheers K

Oh and I know.. not ideal space to be farking around with an auto.. but you get that..

well update time.. nothing regardiung the auto thingy..  But took the ole girl out for a treat at Motatapu.. was awesome yet again
anyway.. on the way.. had a little problem.. Pic to come..  as someone else has that..
Anyway the resulting damage was this, the rest of the bits are somewhere on the macetown track
Image
Now being a wee bit lazy as Im working to hard..   I took the front hub to bits tonight.. and im like. o dear..
Image
Soo this raises another question.. can I get this hellicoiled or is it fubar :?:
and if fubar,, anyone got a spare..lol
3 out of the 4 holes have 1/2 the threads missing..
Thats it..

Yep I have done a 5th stud. Works a treat. The std 4 studs were total shit with 40" boots. I read somewhere that the 5th stud made the whole setup about 40% stronger.
I also replaced all my studs with cap screws that have been wound in from the inside of the hub.
Did a write up on it, but don't know what happened to it and can't be bothered trying to find it on here amongst the never ending bullshit that seems to get posted.

you can drill and dowel the arm to stop it twisting and loosening the studs, not quite my idea its what jafa told me to do when I was having problems with them :D

I forgot, yep did that too. Square dowel, cap screws through from inside the hub and 5th stud. It works.

Not meaning to thread jack, but we had the same issue with our studs coming loose, and a few months ago we broke them all off and lost steering,
So I took the parts to work and cut 8mm key ways, should give it more strength as its not just driving off the studs.
