PTO Winch on 78 Prado.

Post by micahb »

Got myself a PTO winch set up for my wagon. But dont want to put on in the standard position out the front and destroy my approach angle.
Just want pics and/or info from guys who have put them back between chassis rails or even above them??
Thinking about making new front cross member with hole in it for pto shaft so its nice and high and getting rad modded to suit.
I know ill be shortening my shafts etc. its just the mounting the winch up front that im not sure on how im doing it yet.
Any ideas or thoughts welcome.
Cheers, Micah.

you want to have a look at kbushnz's thread he did a nice job of rear mounting a pto on his 78 series prado, its all well documented. If your looking at shortening things up and lifting things at the front you want the pto shaft squared up as best as possible where it connects to the winch if its on an ange the coupling flops around on the shaft and starts flogging it out and it sounds like everything wants to self destruct under load... thats what mines like :D

you'll be sweet front mounting it then if you can juggle it in there with the radiator without compromising radiator size and cooling, a small bit back and a small bit higher can make a big difference to approach angle, chop the piece of shaft your shortening in the middle and sleeve it with some tube and weld it all up. On my 70 series cruiser I didnt mount the winch back any further coz it sits in the ARB bar (bar is 50mm lifted) but the winch itself is sitting about 120mm higher than where they usually sit, the 50mm body lift let me run the pto shaft over the front tube cross member instead of under it, probably slightly different setup to the front of your prado though but something to concider with your planning. I think the engine mount needs a bit of trimming to get the pto shaft past on the prados?

*actually my winch is probably about 20-30 mm further back come to think of it coz the pto shaft is pretty tight in there

mudmike on here has fitted a PTO up front in his KZJ78..
There are photo's on here somewhere...
He had to add blocks for the drive shaft mount positions...
Not sure if he moved radiator up so shaft went over cross member or under...

yeah been looking at clints too. stole all his photos to think on. I used the search thing first before asking for a hand! haha.
Mocked it up tonight, just seeing where it can sit, holy fark its a heavy unit compared to the leccy ones.

the issue is getting it high enough so the front diff won't hit the drive shaft at full flex, but not to high so the drive shaft won't hit the bottom of the rad. I'm using a 3 piece shaft but think the 2 would work better.
Your welcome to come look at mine and see what bits work well and what doesn't.
Mine is back between chassis and is good for approach angle.

Hmm yeah i have the 3 peice shaft too. off a 60 series i think. leaning more towards through the cross member now. would it loose to much strength say if i cut a hole through cross member and put some thick walled pipe in and welded it in there? in my mind it would still retain enough strength. Or just chop it right out and fab a new one built to the shape id need? id rather spend time (read money) getting it right the 1st time. rather than set it up and never be quite happy with it.

Cheers guys.
Mike ill take you up on that offer next time Im up in Auckland. Mind if i bring my camera? will be in touch.

no drama at all, you'll want to look at the shear pin set up I've got heaps better than std. you'll need to look at slop in drive shaft if you go through cross member. the std one does move a bit.
good luck
Mike
