The infamous instrument cluster dramas.....

Post by Gren »

Yep a week of owning this thing and the cluster spat the dummy.
Picked up another yesterday all good.
What I stupidly didn't do is test the power feed to the cluster and today the temp gauge shot the moon.
Righto look inside it and resolver the resistor into place as it had come away. This time check voltages in and hello 24-25 volts!
Back to the inverter and hello 24-25 volts coming out to gauges.

WHO'S GOT ANOTHER FOR ME PLEEEAASSSE!!!

What is it in? I am assuming a Patrol yes?

In a weak moment last year I bought a d22 narvara ute for one of my guys. It has spat the dummy on the whole cluster (temp and fuel go to the max, odo reads 999 999, speedo doesn't work and the tach bounces around 1000rpm. Not a lot of help on the net, Nissan dealer worse than useless, and now I am wondering is there a solution? It is slightly intermitent in as much as it does work about 10% of the time. I thought it could be a dodgy earth or broken wire etc. Has anybody else had this problem with one?

Sorry for the thread jack fella, but you asked exactly the question I needed too as well, and I figured peeps may be able to help us both out.
And sorry, no, I don't have a cluster for a Patrol, can help you out with a ' lux one though
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Ahh yep was just looking at the one running my stereo wondering if that would suffice for the dash....
Think next up ill graft in the auberin water temp and oil pressure to where the charred remain of the factory ones are.

Regarding the cluster mine went spastic after a week of ownership also. A cursory google search showed some guys having luck going over the circuit boards with a soldering iron, apparently dry joints are common. This worked for me, you will need a steady hand and a good soldering iron.
Regarding your 12v feed, I am with coxsy. Take the opportunity to get an uprated unit, I also have a 40 amp one and wouldn't do it any other way. If you put another factory one in chances are the same would happen again anyway. Another option would be a charge equaliser, if you can find one for a good price.

Both the old cluster and the replacement one have already had the boards gone over and solder added. Doesn't inspire confidence in the longevity of these clusters.

Do I ;

A: replace the converter for an aftermarket one as you guys have in the original position and run the factory gauges.

B: as above but do away with the water temp and oil pressure(as these are the two giving me troubles and replace them with the digital auberin items in 12volt.

C: same as B but gauges in 24volt wired independent of the converter

D: something else not yet in my brain

This truck is the family tow wagon and I hope to have it a while and am just trying to make it as smooth and reliable as I can. I ain't rich but I'm motivated :)

Yep, C is what's happening.

Have already wired in the new converter. Will order the 24volt gauges when the missus ain't looking.
