Did the full clean up, it was full of rat crap, bird crap, cow crap, but no rust! Bar surface stuff. Runs well, few leads and plugs and its going great! Has electric fuel pump fitted. Have done the usual service, all fluids, brake check and adjust. Had to fabricate a new brake line and left rear shoes are worn but not bad for a farm truck.
Took her to the top of the thompson track for her maiden voyage, went well, although the front tyres are very hard firestone super traction, and lost some chunks on the hard clay. The rears are near new olympic trak grip, and are great.
Heres my first real mod, shortening the tray. it was origionally a softop, but converted to a ute, and fitted with the g60h (heavy duty) rear springs. Still deciding wat to line the deck with. Needs welding and rear lights refitted, hella trailer lights! My boys helped. Note the awesome stock recovery hook! Before:
Oh, best bit, rego still live! The guy kept it on exemption. Last had a wof 2002. Ive done alot of small stuff, greasing all nipples, degreasing engine and gearbox/transfer, adjusting clutch and bleeding, ditto for brakes, adjusted draglink, wirebrushing surface rust, adjusting wheel bearings, etc. i got it as its simple, tough as hell, and looks awesome! I paid $1200, opinions on price? Not sure on value with ute mods, but i plan on keeping it anyway!
Nice! The old man had one back in the late 80s. Had a 307 chev V8 in it. Went bloody well till the rust got hold of it. Only thing that was saved was the same truck cab which now resides on his 1957 Landy Oddly enough seen 2 in the past month cruising up this way
Well, keeping the P40 engine, its nice and torquey, plus runs mint. Its a budget build (three kids) so will seehow it goes. Im a machinist so alot of stuff i can make at work. A lift and tyres would be nice!
NICE . I used to drive one of these on a farm I worked on years ago and it was awesome used to love the 3speed box, is your one a 3 or a 4 speed. They are a class motor hope you have heaps of fun
Its a 3 speed, its very agricultural to drive, feels tough! Yeah i love the look of the fj, but the price was out of reach, this i love as they are rare and unknown. Parts can be tricky, but many parts are still availible from nissan, repco etc.
If you notice from the pics, rear shackles are off as im getting new steel bushes made at work. It had some nolathane which were stuffed, steel was original fitment so im trying that. Shackles are greasable.
Amazed at the rust or lack of it. Looks - seems it should be in a collection of some sort, surprised your not too worried about giving it a punt while out off road.
Its always educational when something like this is found in gd nick and posted to inform the masses
Ha yeah, steel was original fitment, and required greasing every 600km. The tearoha side of thompson is pretty easy going, wont be knocking her around or going to hard. Just the odd trip now and then, to enjoy it after putting the work in. I belive its right to use it as it was intended. Maybe a few years down the track ill go full resto on it.
Ive been using black guard rust converter and primer to coat the under tray area, chassis, and the back of the cab. Welding on deck rear piece, then light brackets and plate bracket this weekend. Ive found some quila decking timber to line it. Been cleaning up wiring too.
also derusted and converted the brake booster area in the engine bay, must of had a fluid spill as paint was gone.
Extra bonus, the compressor used for the farmers spray tank is still inplace. Ive fitted air comp fittings for an air line for inflation. Down side is the diaphram pump is only able to inflate to 30psi. Not bad for getting from low pressures like 15psi, to 30, enough till you get to a gas station etc.
Id love to take it to shows but not sure if its up to standard. The paint will stay original for the forseeable future, i love the original weathered look it has. Want to polish it up, but really dont want to repaint.
