Time it would take to swap Engine (1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

Post by Snilos »

Hi I was wondering if any one in this forum has had the experience of replacing an engine in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee? I'm looking at a ball park figure with regards to hours removing old engine and fitting new engine for my mechanic.

I would also like to hear of any pitfalls like having to remove front diff etc.... generally your experience would be great.

Thanks in Advance.

Gidday - Not sure how much difference there would be, but i've done it in a 96 Cherokee sport....can't imagine it would be much different, same motor. Took around 7 hours from start to finish, but that was with a mate helping me for a couple of hours in between.

Pretty straight forward swap - nothing major from memory. Hardest part (as is with most i think) is getting to the top bellhousing bolts - much easier if you have a body lift! Most time consuming is the fiddly stuff, removing radiator, air box etc etc - the fiddly stuff.

Cheers,

as above mate you only need to allow a day to do an engine swap so long as there arent any unexpected suprises thrown in that you havent allowed for such as replacing rooted clutch etc

If its a like for like replacement, then should be a day max. Keep in mind that the same engine in different years was probably controlled different for each model and transmission combination.

have done varying vehicles with differing degrees of success.

with front mounted RWD/4WD drive lines i have found it easier to take the gearbox/trans and engine out all as one unit. the benefit being time saved on your back under the vehicle trying to do the starter/slave cylinder/flex plate bolts/bell housing bolts with socket extensions etc when it is quicker to drop the drive shafts put a jack under the cross member engine crane on the engine undo the mounts/ hoses and exhaust and loom and out she comes. much easier too on 4wds as the ground clearance makes it good for bringing the whole lot out through the engine bay.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
