Sticky Surf 4wd?
Sticky Surf 4wd?
Following on from this problem: http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 22&t=34915
Have just returned back to NZ and decided to check that low 4 would engage again and it did, sweet, but it wouldn't disengage. Turned the truck off then on and the light didn't come back on and 4wd seemed to be disengaged.
Any idea's?
Thanks.

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Your going to get the same answers as in this thread http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 22&t=34915 as its the same list of things to check.
Surf add systems are a real common prob and a quick google search turned up 10+ pages of results.
typing in: surf add on the search bar on here gave over 1600 matches so there is information on this site.
Cant be much more help as i havent had this prob myself mainly due to running solid axle.

Current 4wd: Surf Kzn185 ssrg factory Intercooled (yet to start build)
Past 4wd: toyota surf ln130, coil sas, 1uz v8 build

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
How's the SA swapped surf handle compared to the ifs? And mileage? It's on my to-do list with my kzn130 in the distant future, when I've replaced literally everything else on it
Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Shit it can be a lot of things.. Has someone had the exact same prob and can share the fix.
Has anyone on here done the vacuum removal mod? http://hiluxsurf.co.uk/showthread.php?t=66755
Thinking about doing this but have seen some instances where that didn't fix the prob. Going to try go over all vacuum hoses tomorrow and see if any are damaged.

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Further information for anyone that can pin-point a fault.
4wd low and 4wd high engage good and promptly as per usual. However, when put back in RWD the 4wd will not disengage (on grass or road) like normal even cycling through D N and R. Turning the truck OFF then ON immediately disengages 4wd.

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
sounds like it may be a relay not reseting somewhere untill powers off it, could be anything from a bad earth to corroded wires somewhere. thats if its a relay.
Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Ok thanks for the info. I was thinking maybe vacuum issue somewhere? And turning it off then on gives it that sudden burst if vacuum that is enough to flick it back out of 4wd. Is that even possible though?
As far as the relay thing goes, are there relays all over the show for the 4wd system to disengage? Or are you able to tell me where it/they is/are so I can check it directly and all the wires going to and from it?
Thanks again.

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Thanks! Only thing is I'm not too familiar with the auto elec side of things
so I'm assuming there is a way to test the relays from the 4wd ecu plug? (if I'm reading it right!). Rel1 and rel2 are the 2 relays I need to check? Does the tester connection column mean bridging the 2 specified terminals to test the component?
Or am I completely wrong and need to test the relay(s) directly..
Will have a look over all the grounds I can find/see around the gbox and transfer case shortly.
EDIT: bit more info., pulled 4wd ecu board out and everything looked ok and could hear/feel the relay clicking when the 4wd button is pushed on and off. Not sure where I find the other relay(s) to be checked. Are the vsv things on the drivers side gaurd under bonnet with all the vacuum hoses going to and from them?

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
maybe its a vacuum leak somewhere if the relays are all working.
dont know much about toyotas just throwing out ideas for ya as maybe theres something no one else has thought about.
i think the toyotas have a little cover on the side of the transfer case/gearbox, have you looked inside there for corrosion etc aswell?

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
I'm not sure if all the relays work I have only found that one in the 4wd ecu below stereo. That's why I'm keen to know if there are any more.
Yea I was thinking a small vacuum leak but wouldn't know where to start looking or checking!
Yep have had that cover off when the 4wd stopped working altogether, cleaned everything out inside there, sanded back contacts, sealed it and put cover back on. Since then the 4wd will engage but not disengage without turning the truck off then back on.

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Dirtydog are you able to explain where all of the relays are that control the 4wd system (specifically turning the 4wd off)? I've only found the one in the 4wd ecu under the stereo unit.
Cheers.

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
ill see if i can find a workshop manual for you, dont know exactly where they are or how many there should be, dont own a surf but have had mates with similar problems.
it may be worth putting it into someone that has fixed this sort of thing before, as it could be an easy fix, or a hard fix its hard to tell.

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Ok thanks let me know what you find.
Yea I've been in touch with as many of the people that I know that have Surf's and no one seems to have had this problem before and quite hesitant to take it to an auto sparky or mech because they'll charge an arm and a leg no matter what it is.
Trying to get a hold of an auto sparky mate but it's always nearly impossible
so I'm sorta stuck trying to figure it out on my own and online haha

Re: Sticky Surf 4wd?
Ok thinking it's 99% electrical now as figured out that in 4wd if I put it in N and turn the key off (truck still runs because of turbo timer) and then push the button if in high range or move lever to high rear if in low range and then turn key back to on it will immediately be out of 4wd.
Def sounds electrical seeing as how truck doesn't have to turn off to get out of 4wd but the ignition seems to have to go back to ACC then back to ON to get out of damn 4wd yea?
