Winch Wiring Queries

Post by jonossiksilvia »

Hi all

Done a good search and need help with the following:

Basically i'm fitting up the winch and want to do it right the first time especially with the price of cable.

Everyone is suggesting using 70mm2 cable min and some are using the 95mm2 stuff.

trouble is i'm having a hard time finding the cable everyone is using. so far have only been able to find some 50mm2 cable from redpaths for $22+gst per meter and is total diameter of 15mm - see photos at end. so with this cable at 95mm2 would put the diameter at 29mm approx and the issue is this stuff is $39+gst per meter and is huge when trying to find space to run it and it looks alot bigger by looking at the pics of the orange stuff that people have been putting photos up of.

Rang Boc and apparently they dont have any stock of the orange stuff at there sockburn branch currently so cant go see it to see if its suitable - they said they can order it for me but 5meters of the stuff is alot of money if its the wrong stuff.

Can anyone please be able to measure the diameter of their cables the same way as i have in below picture that they have got from Boc so i can see the sizing of it? is this stuff really flexible? ie good for running sharp corners.

Pictures below:

Cheers guys

Ps dont shoot me if i used wrong search terms

Edit: Here is the mounting location for the solinold box. its 1m between that and winch. also you can see the 2 650cca batteries also

I've always used K Simpson for electrical supplies they will be able to get you a price on both 75 & 90mm2 cable..

They also seem to normally give a really good discount too :-)
Hope that helps

75mm cable is huge for the winch! 90 is epic!

Standard wiring is 35mm and if it is just a short run from the solinoid box (200mm or so) to the winch motor then even that is fine, just run 50mm to the control box from battery.

I ran 50mm welding cable on mine and it has been fine. You can just get carried away spending lots of un-necessary money if you want but if you run 50mm your 8mm terminals on the winch motor will get warm far quicker and be the weak link than your 50mm cable.

Running 50mm cable was a nuisance to get it sitting right and being flexable, I can't imagine what 90mm would be like!!

Same^^^^^^as^^^^^above.
50mm is fine for those short runs.
BTW don't measure the outer diameter as this can change with different brands and types. At work our 25mm has the same outside as the 35mm, it just has thicker insulation.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Yep, same winch as we wired up for bob_or_jim in his V8 surf. Used 50mm welding cable the same as mine and it went good.

The angriest winch I have seen with one motor was a mates warn hi mount that was obviously built on a wednesday, and it was bob standard with 35mm cable!

i'v been running the same 50mm welding cable as njv6 for a couple of years now on my 24volt winch and never had any problems.

I was lucky enough to pick up some cable from the scrappy used for wiring locomotive engines.

have just got 50mm cable for my winch. Compared to two other idenical winches winches mine puled just as well/fast as on with the 90mm but we both were faster than the one with the standard wire.
unless its getting hammered ie comp stuff were its full load 90% of the time then there is no need for bigger cable.
