Went for a casual drive up to the Waipara gorge with my lady and the dog. Mint day until.................... On the way back the dog was on the deck of the 60, it decided to jump off and got tangled up......... Broken rear leg!!!!!!
So as we speak the dog is at the vet retreat, having x rays this morning and having surgery on Tuesday :(
Wreaked my day seeing her in such pain :( Didn't really realise how much I loved the dog until then.

Bugger!
Ran my last hound over on Muriwai....saddest day of my life. Got a new puppy soon after and ran her over when 10 weeks old. Her back leg owes me 3.5k
Titanium pin in there now for the rest of her life.....still named Zoom (Zoom by name, Zoom by nature) Hopefully will fully recover.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

We survived Thompsons 8) , wasn't as quick as that  but not too far off. Started at 9am and we were at the bomb site just after 12.... And out of the track completely on the Katikati side sometime after 4.... Did plenty of winching.... we had 5 trucks ranging from a zuk, nissan's and a couple of toyota's. Pulled a local who rolled his 40 series at the Katikati side. He was lucky to be alive  ... That held us up for a bit...as his pto had sheared a pin and turfor winch they were using sheared a pin, So with a triple line pull we got him back on the track and escorted him out dragging him thru the last few winch area's.... Will do a better write up later with pic's.
Thanks monstr (Steve) my winch man....and advisor. Steve was working hard all day

Stripped out the Right front CV / 1/2 shaft assembly from my KZJ-71 Prado on Friday. 1/2 shaft splines all munted, so looking for another one 2nd hand.

I had got one from Nathan at Kaiapoi Repowers, who wasn't sure whether it was Prado or Hilux. However the 1/2 shaft was too short and the inner seal diameter 33 instead of 35, so that's going back.

Anyone got any Prado RH axle, CV & stub axle bits?

Inboard of the axle housing ball I found what looks like a oil shield loose inside the housing. Note I have removed the oil seal at this point, which took some doing due to the garks, and this part is not part of the seal (much larger in diameter).
RF hub axle seal.small.jpg

I managed to start to get it to locate in the bore near the ball.
Which way does this go round - open side of 'U' towards diff or hub?
What does it do - reduce oil coming at 1/2 shaft seal?

replaced the faulty lift pump, redid the plumbing and wiring.
new pump is 1/10th of the noise, half the flow rate but still does 3 psi at full rev. now to see if it leaks overnight.

Got up friday, drove 8 hours for a conference and AGM.

Got up saturday competed in final round of National 4x4 Trials, came 1st in Class and 4th overall, including rolling 4 times off a hill and then later on I managed to roll my ankle, tweak my knee and stick my hand on gorse to break the fall all at the same time.
Went to National prizegiving where we managed 3rd in Class and 11th overall for the season.

Got up sunday drove 8 hours back to a very happy dog :-)

Thanks Tim
Useful to know re the shield. Was as I figured and I suspect is yet another piece of the botched insurance axle housing replacement job, done 2 years ago.

Yep the outer edge of the seal housing bore is kind of riveted over in places where it got garked. Will repair this with some carbide burrs and one of my die-grinders prior to fitting the new axle assembly.

Thanks to Suzolla, I will be able to fit one of the new Longfields in here. To do this I will have to fit a steel sleeve into the seal housing to take the seal that fits on the Hilux sized seal diameter, on the custom Prado length Longfield axle. 33 instead of 35mm ID
Looking forward to the added strength and being able to use larger chains on bigger wheels sometime in the future!

Had a really choice day today, lead a group of 6 4x4's on a family day trip to Hanmer for a swim. Went down the Rainbow Road, left St Arnaud at 9am and got back at 6pm.
One of the best things for me was that my Dad was down visiting so he got to see a heap of new country that blew him away. I only get to see him once a year so it was really cool.
The only real bummer was a Hilux in the group broke an axle on the way back out. It wasn't a huge issue we had enough spare seats so we carried on and then went back to recover it with a trailer
