Thompsons 30 Mar 2013 with photo's

Post by kbushnz »

Just a quick story to wet your appetites..
This track has been on my bucket list for many years and yesterday I finally did it !.
With five other trucks, 2 Nissan's, 2 Toyota's and one Zuk we set out at just after 9am Saturday morning. It was overcast and a little wet under foot.
The trip up to the lookout was un eventful. We bared left and it wasn't long before we were into our first winch.. Nothing too hard just a little greasy hill. Our lead vehicle drove some of the obstacles while the rest just managed to scramble the noses up so our winch men could reach the hooks.
This went on for the next 3 ish hours till we turned a bend and found ourselves at the bomb site. An open area with a series of large bog holes and few trees to winch off in near proximity. Monstr who was my winch man came prepared with a loooong winch extension which was put to good use. So after a bite to eat our lead vehicle went down the guts winching off the only tree but ended up breaking a rope. This didn't look too good for the rest of us. However while he sorted that out and with a little encouraging I dropped the Prado into the mud and went down the right hand side....
Using this line and the winch extension the pto quietly whirred away and pulled me thru at a steady rate. Pausing only for one of the others to hook a rope on and use me to winch upto. The next vehicle doing the same till we had a series of trucks in various bogs inching our way across. And in what seemed only a few minutes (think it was about an hour) we were all across and only our leader was stuck in no mans land. A quick winch from me and we had him up with us for the remainder of the trek out to Katikati.
The winching didn't stop...We still had a few to do and also a rescue of a local who had rolled his 40 series off the track and sheared his pins on the pto and a turfor while extracting himself. Needless to say we pulled him up onto the track and escorted him out.
Behind us on the track were a group of 8 from Blenheim and they caught us at the bomb site. However once we exited the track and did some running repairs they never came thru.. So we aren't sure if they even made it out... Time will tell...
Funny thing is it took longer to drive home than doing the track...hehehe A few of the team developed overheating issues (Nissan's) what with all the mud caked fronts and also an alternator swap in a Toyota.
So I had a great time. Tested the truck fully... The winch went hard all day with no issues.. Think we did at least 14 to 15 good winch sessions.
Many thanks to the guys and gal... Especially Monstr (Steve)
Now onto some photo's. These were taken by our only female member on the trip, Sarah so big thanks to her for recording the day.....
Note: I have picked ones with mostly me in it so as not to publish other members trucks without their permission...Or is it to not show them in compromising positions....
Here is a google maps link showing the track...Its only 14.4 k's long (the off road bit).

Great Vid!

Wow, after the driest summer on record and bombing range is still that wet!!!

Four trucks from our club did the return trip. Got over to Katikati fine but had a harder time coming back (only one out of 5 winches still running and two out of 4 trucks dead by time they got back out).

Monstr will appreciate this one..
Now that I run two winches, one pto and one electric... I naturally had both in tip top condition for the trip.
However.... the weekend before on a club run, one of the guys had an alternator issue and drained a battery... So I lent him my winch battery and put his in my truck to charge it... And at the end of the run gave his battery back and left mine with him so he had a charged one for the trip home...
Needless to say I had to connect everything up again when my battery was retuned...
Guess what I forgot to connect when I installed my battery...

When we were airing up at the end of the trip I discovered my winch battery almost flat... cause I use it to run some accessories..

Lucky I didn't need the electric....eh

Anyhow... for the trip home I decided to connect the charge wire back on but dropped the wing-nut into the engine bay which was full of mud... Oh well that's gone...

Nope... guess what.. next to my gold rock in the mud was my silver wing-nut....ahhhh ain't life grand...

Don't forget to pop the standard 8k invoice in the post tomorrow =)

Any chance of a pic of the carnage? Awesome that he was ok but how is the truck!

His truck was in one piece and drivable... Didn't look any worse for wear... It was an open top with a real large diameter roll cage....
When we got to it, its was hanging off the turfor on its wheels just off the track...Poking its nose up... So I suppose the hard part had been done...
Yes we did consider an 8k invoice.. but not for him

Man that looks like it was a fun trip, i was lucky enough to see the normal side when it was starting to get dry, we went out with a toyota blizzard with pto and a safari with electric winch, got to the big ruts that go up the hill (cant remeber what theyre called) then turned around cause the blizzard got 1 too many flats.

it was fun, but the other side looks like its where all the fun is, can kinda see why we turned around....

gunna add that to my bucket list, cheers for sharing dude.

Jeremy will correct me, but I think its a Toyota high mount with twin motors.

This was crazy! They were on their own, and did a 360 degree roll down the bank from where the lady in the pink top is standing. Lucky they had a good roll cage and were wearing seat belts, otherwise the result could've been very different.

Just found out the Nelson / Blenheim club who caught up to us at the bomb site area (just as we were recovering our last truck at about 2 ish) didn't get out of the track until 230am Sunday..... That just puts in perspective what this track can do to man and truck !

I don't think it was just tyre size... Our Zuk member was on 32's..And got just as far as us
I think they had a few winches fail which slowed them down... And when the white one came around the corner into the bombing range it didn't sound too healthy in the diff / cv department.... Will keep an eye out for a trip report in the club mags...Will make for good reading
