Easy question to answer really. 33's MAX, preferably 31's. Otherwise you'll dig big ruts and bugger the tracks and murray won't be able to get his pajero through

Guess as how I'm living down here in Reefton now it'd be hard to justify not doing this trip! Haven't got a particularly big garage but I can at least offer some space under a roof if anyone needs to do some urgent work on their truck. Basic tools here but no welder and my compressor's broken, although can probably arrange those too if necessary.

There'll probably even be room in the fridge for the required lubricant to ease such late night processes.

The 'zuk probably won't have the winch fitted yet so may be limited to the slightly easier trips, but that's okay as Lisa hasn't been to most places here yet.

Smurf, can you keep Ashleigh advised, motivated & on track for this trip? She'll enjoy it and like me, thinks any excuse for a jaunt into Daniells is a good one. She may cadge a ride down from Nelson with someone, but could just as easily drive her car down if others need a ride and wanna share gas costs?

We told Ash a few weeks back and she used a few expletives as she didn't think she/you would be able to do it. As I said there are always spare seats. We are still working on finding a house to fit a couple of families into for the 4-5 days. We can drag her down for the weekend.
Good score on the winch too.

There isn't really anyone running the show,
Each trip that is being run will be organised by a trip leader who will the go to man for that trip.
Hopefully we will have a bit of an itinerary with a few trips (hard core and not so shiney/shiney) going on each day, that people can put there names down to head out on.

No stress. There been a bit of shit happening in the area recently. I have a relationship with Doc that I will let them know what 4wds in the area when I know. I have been going there for the last 20yrs and want to continue that for the yrs to come. With the Doc cuts to come will mean that they have less men on the ground in the area and I am trying to stop them from locking areas off ( our 4wd areas that we have been doing for many of a year). Hence the request to catch up with who is running the show. It may be many but still keen to catch up some how.

Hi Nig

I've heard that DOC are keen to restrict/ban 4WD access to Big River due to regular and serious vandalism and idiocy by the usual type of moronic non 4WDclub-member bogans. To date, however, nothing has been put in place and if you have a good relationship with the local DOC personnel then touching base would be an excellent idea.

hi ineil

as the road into big river is a legal road DOC cannot restrict or ban or close the road. only the local district council can do that.

hi ineil

as the road into big river is a legal road DOC cannot restrict or ban or close the road. only the local district council can do that.

So if DOC get onto the council about people leaving the legal road and creating damage, then the council may move to close the road on their (DOC) recommendation.
DOC would be able to restrict access to areas in Big River that aren't part of the legal road if they wished, which would have an impact on acess also.
We need to look after the places we have left. An historical site such as Big River, as it is so easily accessable needs to be looked after (by locals and visitors) so everyone can still get in there and enjoy our history.

Well said Hosehustler!

While the main access may be a legal road, don't go thinking that means your continued access is guaranteed as of right. If you don't think DOC is constantly lobbying/politicking/shmoozing the local council to ensure they are on the same page as much as possible, you're greener than I'm cabbage-looking, as the saying kinda goes.

DOC administers most of the terminal sites at the historic ends of these tracks and, to give them due credit, they and others have put a lot of effort and expense into restoring and preserving the historic aspects. It's understandable they get highly protective in view of the juvenile and destructive behaviour of that small but inevitable pea-brained minority that seems intent on *#*#ing it up for everyone else.

Really looking forward to having all you buttoned-down, civilised, conservative, restrained, alcohol-free, non-swearing, tolerant, ethical, delicate little flowers down here for a few days  :D

Tongue in cheek? I have absolutely no idea what you might mean my good man!
Don't you know that Reefton is the spiritual home of all ultra-green, politically correct, anti-mining, rabid supporters of forest & bird.

If prohibition ever ends down here we might even open our very own milk bar and sell fizzing beverages to the passing masses.

Well said Furnace, why has someone had to jump on to and ruin what could have been a perfectly good TRIP like the ones past run. It's the same old story --------- some body (non club member ) spoilt it for us all TREAD LIGHTLY club members ------- so let's get the place closed and then run CLUB MEMBERS trips only :o , with Doc's permission  .
I was going to go and drink , smoke, and leave WHEEL MARKs and I still wish you all a good safe time, but getting to PC for me.

It is a shame that some idiots are stuffing it up for everyone and it is up to us all [ not just Club members ] to try and sort these w**kers out.
The Big river track is a great track for 4x4 trips with the family,i take my Grand kids and my Great grands kids up there often, they love it, be a very big shame to see it closed and it would also be a shame to see the track only open to 4x4 clubs

Plenty of muppets this side of the ditch as well fellas.

Hi Fitzy
I quite often say to Janet how lucky we have been to have enjoyed so much 4 wheel driving and companionship before all this PC stuff happened.

TAKE IT OUT ON THE PIGEONS WHILE YOU CAN. or is that off limits too.???

Remember to call in for a drink but don't leave wheel marks in the drive.

Hi Furnace

Definitely no offence intended and I think my poor wording may have led you to misconstrue my meaning. I have nothing against non-club members per-se, in fact I have not been a club member for most of my 4WD experience.

I am, however, living in Reefton and am aware of some specific instances that have led to a hardening in attitudes against 4WDers in some quarters, actions that were carried out by people who were not part of any club or club event.

When I used the term non club-member I was not intending to infer or imply that that was the reason for their 'boganism', it was merely an additional factor in my description of them.

In hindsight, I should not have used that term and freely apologise to any who have taken offence. Like texting, it is far too easy to write something and put across a meaning other than that intended.

Believe me, I am the last person anyone would describe as PC!! I do, however, take exception to any of those muppets who jeopardise all of our access to 4WD-friendly land.
