So im in the process of taking the gearbox out of my terrano as it decided it didnt want to work any more. So far ive got both drive shafts off and unpluged most things i can see attached to the box. Next i assume i need to remove the torsion bars with the cross member they are attached to. Ive never removed these before so are there any tips on doing this? Do i need to have the truck sitting up on axle stands? do they just slide out or is there a trick to them? Also should i mark them any where for when i reinstall them?
Is there any other tips or tricks i need to do?

I have not removed my gearbox so I cannot help, but I can suggest you use the search button at the top right corner of the page.
I did a quick search and there is shit loads of posts on gearbox swaps etc.
Try that

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Tip - measure vehicle height before removing torsions. Makes it easier to set it back to same height

Re: Taking gearbox out of D21 terrano
Yea def measure vehicle height before removing torsion bars, next mark in white paint pen both ends of torsion rods unease they slip out of sockets while removing. Block truck up to get weight off front wheels then remove torsion rods an cross member.
Put trolley jack under gearbox an remove gearbox cross x member, slowly lower down carefully an engine will tilt back wards so your can access top bolts with half inch sock set with long extension bars (I used 3 by memory) put swivel joint on top just before socket. Remove all top bolts then lift trans back up an do lower bolts. Remove two small bolts that hold transfer box gear lever in so it can drop down out of way (it's oval plate that has a in that goes through joint in linkage). Go over an check all is removed around box, if all bolts are out it should be free to slide backwards carefully, remember if auto the torque converter will still be in place (can leave this by removing bolts though bell house window before I bolting box)

Interesting, I wouldn't have thought you would get the bell housinge back far enough to clear the TC.
Trans guys said they remove the transfer case prior to the trans. I reassembled this way i.e. put the trans in then the transfer case. Certainly it was easier to reassemble in 2 parts. I would try this for disassembly in future.

Here's a late reply, have to excuse my last reply it was written quickly from phone to get him started. Torque converter does stay in place, but can remove with trans by opening inspection window (if doesn't have this remove bottom sandwich plate) an removing the 4 bolts (turn torque converter with power bar on crank pulley bolt. Interesting I have removed this a few times an never split the transfer case, am due to do it gain soon will look into it as its quite heavy to do by self complete but def possible
