I normally just heat things until they are hot to the touch. i.e hot coffee . How are you welding it? I have heard of people arc welding the spider gears with a special rod but can't remember what made it work better than standard rods

Hi-ten eight arc welding rods would suit hardened or tough parts. And pre heating will help with penetration. And be sure to not quench or cool the parts quickly.
