A little while, maybe two years now I think :shock:

Out in three weeks though

Today drilled and bolted the front bulkhead mounts (had to modify one first but ended up cutting a piece of one and accidently welding it back on to the side i just cut if off d'oh!! ). My brother removed the dash and ripped all the wiring out including the rats nest that was in there (from when it was in storage for two years in a barn :shock:

)

Did some trimming to the tray to fit the tanks. Have decided to lift the tanks and slot them in a little higher to clear the radius arm which requires the building of a new seat box. The old one is pretty fecked anyway and this will allow the easy mounting of new seats.

Tomorrow, will mount the fuel tanks up and shorten the rear drive shaft. Should be a big day (in the rain, meant to rain all day dam it).

Also removed the windscreen (decided to run it with the windscreen folded down as much as possible to allow for the bren gun to be mounted

) Needed to take the dashboard off to make a mounting bracket for the range rover steering column. Wasnt to bad an effort today considering I only started at 3:30pm

Will see how i get on tomorrow.

make sure you take pics of the fuel tanks. Im still undecided on whats going to happen with mine. I might make a fuel tank that fits in the tub :scratch:

Oh, and how close are you to starting the engine. I (or we) want a first time startup vid :wink:

Got one of the tanks mounted last night. Fits in quite nice. I have it sitting about 5mm above the radius mount. This means I have to make a new seat box but thats ok as the old one was pretty worn out. I had to do a bit of chopping around the old seatbelt mounts to get the tanks to their new height. Depending on how high the seats are now might have to get one of those boy racers small steering wheels so the old knees dont get in the way :shock:

I've managed to get a new lumination module for the ignition. An expensive mistake to say the least. Just a hint when stripping a donor vehicle - take all the bits you think arnt necessary, it will come back and bite hard :roll:

Hopefully tonight will get the 2nd tank mounted (primary) and make the seat box to fit the wicked expensive bucket seats ($75) I got off trademe

Look on http://www.onlinemotorsport.net/ , the have heaps of second hand ones that have exceeded their homologation date and can no lobger be used for rallying. They are bloody cheap and there is never anything wrong with them. I think its 3 yrs before they need to be replaced for rallying.

Site seems to be undergoing work, there's usually HEAPS of stuff for sale!!!!

I believe certain types of midget cars, stock cars that sort of thing have to replace their harnesses every two years, If you have a contact in that line of motorsport chase it up, they'd probably give them to you, I know that's how I got mine

Well today was a major step.

Fuel tanks are completely mounted bar some minor support bracing. Just fabricating up the new seat box

Setup some temporary wiring for starting the engine today. Jumper lead for engine earth, jumper lead for fuel pump earth(nice and long), screw driver for starter switch, boat fuel can for tank (just for starting, as main tanks arnt plumbed yet). Fuel ended up pissing out of the carby as the float or whatever was seized open. Few wacks and she closed up nicely. Turned it over a couple of times and found out had the leads were off by one on the dizzy, so moved them around one place and bang straight into life.

Didnt run it up long as had no cooling system plumbed up.

Lots of little things now, finish seat box up, mount seats, make steering column bracket up to mount to firewall(cockpit side) you can see the dash is mostly off for this, plumb the tanks, plumb the cooling, plumb the brakes, mount the battery......the list goes on :roll:

Bit of an update 1 week and 3 days out from the event.

Most of this week including the weekend has gone into get the seats mounted (seemed to take for ever). Other stuff has been done like organising the brake system , clutch system, exhausts (temp ones, going to make some 4-2-1 headers myself, $700 from autobend - yeah bloody right) battery location organised, steering all put back togeather, wiring stuff sorted, steering column welded to firewall, engine and trans mounts all bolted up, fuel tanks in getting modified and repaired (thanks tim for the contact ) plus a few other things.

Anyway here is a pic of the seat box all tacked togeather with the tanks mounted beneath and up out of the way.

With this new state of the art, custom made - high quality workmanship - seatbox comes the added benifit of easy mounting of the 5 point harness. It was just a matter of drilling 5 holes in the appropiate places, worked out really well. I think your meant to get special hoops or something that these harnesses clip into, but I just got some chain and cut every third link out, bolt one link up and clip into the other. Much cheaper and kiwi like.

Mamoth progess on the LR today. People thought I was optimistic yesterday when I said I wanted it going by end of today.

late yesterday afternoon

And tonight.

Drove it onto the lawn and back into the car port. Put my foot on the brakes (after spending an hour bleeding the dam things, twin lines to each front wheel) and nearly went through the windscreen. The brakes seem to be scarely good :shock:

Power steering made turning the old girl a breeze too

Just a few things to tidy up:

tie down the brake lines
diff breathers
few bolts here and there
some bonnet clips
chuck some more wheel nuts on
mount an anti fire device
mount the grill
fit a tow hook to the front
bend the exhausts down a bit so dont gas ourselves
find some aircleaners
swap the diff for the welded one and cut the axles
bolt in my harness

and thats all folks

Yeah I've worked lotsa late nights to get there though and I think I've made it.

Last couple of days have been a battle and a half with drive shafts and loosing the tools somewhere in the shed to do certain things.

Drive shafts:

After welding the rear diff (12 spline) I obviously needed to use the 12 spline half shafts from the range rover in the disco axle. The disco half shafts have a support a third of the way in the form of a bearing it seems. Never mind the rangie ones just wont make use of that. Went to put the bolts back in and the holes were to small - not to worry just drill em. 30mins later and after sharpening the drill 10 times I successfully drilled one :shock:

The next one the axle slipped in the vice and I subsequently snapped the drill bugger..... I thought at this rate I'll be up all night just redrilling the holes. The thought of taking the locked diff out and putting the open one in was just to depressing. So I hunted out an engineering place and took it in and 30 minutes later all drilled at a cost of $35 bucks. Somethings are just easier left up to the pros. The fact I only had a pistal drill and no cutting oil meant the drill bit didnt stand a chance.

Exhausts:

Lately I've been finding a lot of "sorry dont stock that for that vehicle" or " need to see the vehicle" etc. eg when I called autobend enquiring about extractors for a rover v8 engine " what make and model of car" um do you have anything for a rover v8 space is not an issue? "whats it in?" um a landrover. "what year?" um 1973. "Nothing for that model sorry". Fark do you have any for any LR? "um let me see, yup a county but cant guarintee it will fit though". cool how much " 700+gst, but cant guarintee it will fit!"

I gave up at that point.

Went to pc exhausts on st asaph, young guy there said need to see car but I just persisted in what i wanted, he followed my instructions to the letter and now I have two side exhausts mounted up for the LR and it sounds so good I'm not sure I want to make it road legal and loose THE AWESOME NOISE :twisted:

Just a few things left to do for the trial:

Mount front tow hooks
air cleaner assembly (biggest job left)
exhaust hangers (verticle to upside down required) :shock:

couple of bolts here and there
fill rear diff oil
mount front grill
add another set of bonnet clips

plus other stuff I missed.

All on saturday night.
