Hi Guys
Dose any one run Diff breathers ?
What are your thoughts on them i would of thought that the stock breather from factory do the job being a 4wd ?
Are they for foke doing a heap if water crossings on outings or are they a sensible idea to have even if you are going to go through the odd mud hole an water crossing every now an then ?
Any input is welcomed
Cheers
Diffs, T-Case/Trans Breathers thoughts???
Re: Diffs, T-Case/Trans Breathers thoughts???
Stock breathers tend to not go high enough and act as piping into which water is sucked.
Our front breather finishes level with the top of the radiator (and now just thinking about it I would like to move it to the firewall), the rear breather goes up inside the c pillar somewhere.

Hi
The stock toyota breather ( Check out the new 70 series They are the same) is a 1 way valve. they let air out as the diff gets hotter. However then when you dip that same hot diff in a cold river the diff will try to suck in air. If it is the stock breather it will not be able to so if will pull in air from anywhere including the wheel bearings and water with that .
So yes new breather hoses off diffs, Gearbox if possible and transfer case.
I do know some people do the starter and the knuckle housings as well.
This saves changing the diff oil after every trip....

I run extended breathers on all my 4x4's. All the stock ones I've seen have been a joke. Its an easy mod. I just run a single common line and T in the gearbox, tc and rear diff. Front diff has its own.

Yep, agree!
One other great idea someone gave me though, top off each of your breathers with a simple, cheap plastic inline fuel filter (making sure the flow direction will prevent liquid flowing into the breather hose). This is cheap as chips & lets them breathe easily but adds a waterproofing/dustproofing element at the top end (just in case).

Thanks for the good input guys,
I like your cheap alternative idea "lneil"
Have your use this with success ?
I'm a bit skeptical weather or not it will completely keep water out tho, as there will be vacuum pressure involved i assume once the warm diff internals rapidly cool off when the diff touches cold water an shrinks maybe ?
Some one may be able too clarifie on this theory ?

suzuki breathers are easy to do, pop the cap off and run a 1/8th bpst tap in the breather and put a pushlock fitting on it and run the blue arb type air hose ($1/m), bodgy a filter on the end if you wish like was mentioned before. makes it nice and tidy, other hose tends to brake. fuel hose is good but expensive and a bit bulkier

I run the fuel filters on my breathers and haven't had any problems, but they're well up just under the bonnet. I like BlakeJ's suggestion of using robust airline too!
