3Y ENGINE is it really that bad?

Post by Tourley »

Hi guys,

I'm looking at getting a petrol hilux running a 3y big change from the 3.0 turbo diesel navara.
How bad does the 3y perform? Will it cruise at 100km/hr? Also how does it go in low ratio off road? Are they worth looking at or should they just be avoided? Thanks in advance.

I have had a surf auto with one, was a thirsty beast but adequate off road, just make sure your on top of gear changes on sand/beachs.
never missed a beat that i can remember, just had a small oil leak from the main seal

They are gutless and hugely thirsty, but generally bulletproof. I wouldn't waste my time with one unless purchase is very cheap and a repower is an option.

Cheers guys. Yeah repower is an option but not straight away. For a 1UZ conversion into a YN65 what sort of cost, 4000ish?

Yeah I'd be doing it myself are there any other cheaper conversions that are worth it?
I presume a 3y wouldn't like 35s?

Not bad at all, i bought one a while back, it went really well. Was going to re-power but never needed to. the injected model has the same output as the 2.4d (2L) but much nicer to drive, i was doing heaps of kms and getting 10l/100km open road with 31" muddies, definitely no probs offroad. Will need to be re-geard for 35's, mine didnt mind the 33's but fuel economy suffered

The particular truck I'm looking at is on 35s but comes with a set of 32s. What diffs could you put in it to run 35s? As aren't the standard petrol ones 4.88s?

X2 as soon as my new clutch arrives Im going to put one in my 85 yn60 surf, With a body lift it will apparently bolt straight in then just have the fuel and elecrics to sort am hoping to get a build thread going once things are underway.

Thanks Stu

Had a 3RZ in my other hilux. Bloody great motor. Torquey as hell down low and they love to rev while sounding superb too! I would consider this engine for a repower as opposed to the 1UZ. With aftermarket gear on them, crazy power can be made with these donks.

What sort of mileage do you get out of them. Do they reach the half million km like the 2.8 diesels? When you say they are lacking on sand , is that at speed or chugging along first low. I am looking and changing from 3.1td bighorn to a 2 l petrol hilux. I know it will be a lot different but how much

Having driven both and currently owning a 3.1TD Bighorn on 33's the power output of the diesel is a lot better, especially the torque. With bigger tires on the beach the 3Y will struggle.

I guess it all comes down to what you are going to do with it and how and where you want to drive it. At the end of the day no one ever complained about having too much power though!

The 3Y is a reliable motor but as already mentioned pretty gutless and a bit thirsty. I would take a 2.4TD Surf/Hilux over a 3Y.

Matt.

Cheers For that. Really starting to go off them now. Ruc and reg are just so dam expensive for a truck I don't use much and looking for a flat deck
