Four pinion lock right back lash?

Post by Petemcc »

My truck has a four pinion diff in the rear with a lockright auto locker in it. With the two pinion ones having the locker makes it seem like the diff has heaps of back lash as the locker can move on the cross pin. I was under the truck before and the diff has the same feel as if it didn't have a locker in it. i.e. hardly any back lash.

Is this how the four pinion ones are or is there something wrong?

Cheers,
Pete

It is a 4 pinion open and not an lsd diff head isn't it?
I can't recall the backlash in mine ( and diff is now farked so I can't test it either  )
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Yea pretty sure it was open. I bought it all set up off jdub. He paid some guy to put it in and set it up so should be good. Hasnt been in a truck before so never road tested. Seems to work properly. Can get it ratcheting when jacked up.

I have lockrights in my surf with the rear being 4 pinion. It def has a bit of backlash. My truck is auto and notice it when lifting on and off throttle.
I'm sure I read in the specs it says what it is meant to be

With the old two pinion lokkas I have had you can turn the input about a 10th of a full turn without the wheels moving because of the way the cross pin locates in the lokka. You can't turn the input with the wheels on the ground (just like a normal diff with no lokka).

Everything appears to be working fine though when you do the tests you can hear it ratcheting. Both wheels in both directions go fine.

Hopefully it is how it's meant to be. I really don't want to take the diff out again!

both styles of locker cam on the cross pin. i noticed no difference between them when i did mine. how much it turns before contacting depends a little bit on how much clearance you set in the locker. if the side shims are well worn you will have more clearance and more 'backlash'.
quite possible the 2 pinion shims where more worn and had more clearance.
