Terrano trans question

Hey I changed out a mates terrano automatic transmission last weekend with a second hand replacement, the trans I removed had the mechanical speedo cable drive but the replacement was off a slightly newer truck an has a electrical speedo reader (wires an plug coming out of sensor), I am wondering if it is possible to switch these over an if anyone has done it before.

if the threads match then I am sure you can. Be careeful though, some of those threads look the same but aren't. I learnt this the hard expensive way.

Sweet so that unit unscrews? It has a offset face plate with a 8mm bolt, guessing remove bolt an use poligrips to unscrew as has no hex...thanks for heads up I havent adventured to far to save expensive repairs

its is interesting that the main big thing that goes on these are the outos
my one did i have asked about it and yes anything can go
but the gearbox manual or outo are the main offenders

Yeah it's the third auto I have changed (and still a takes 6hours of swearing) all on different trucks, nearly all have been from overheating, the oil expands a lot when hot an kills everything, I have seen it expanded to round 30-40mm past the hot high level on dipstick, once cooled back to normal but metal filing throughout. Some people have the mentality that trans and diffs don't need servicing an only worry about engine oil

Surely it's not the oil level that is the issue but the heat. I run mine over fill all the time - with more oil it takes longer to heat up on a hill when towing and the oil doesn't get as hot.

I now run a switch to lock the TC in any gear and the Auto runs cool as a result anyway - but still run over fill as a safety measure.

Yep meant in general it expands when hot and kills everything, not sure for its the expansion or the heat both would play a part...I haven't fitted a lock switch yet is on the list...Philip, can install a switch that locks TC to keep oil cool due to no slip as such which otherwise causes the friction heat. As i believe most the time the TC is slipping when driving, could be wrong but thats my understanding

Spot on. Most of the heat in the trans is generated by the slip of the torque converter.
