HILUX SURF IDLER STOPPER

Post by Roenut »

hey!
i replaced my origional idler in my truck as it was a bit flogged out,
but lastnight i noticed the new one (done around 1000km) was also stuffed, but it looked as if the shaft itself has shifted in the housing, so the drag link is sitting very close to the chassis rail and does touch with the wheel turned.
has anyone built or designed a steering idler stopper for the 130 series surfs?
i know there is a few designs for the d21 nissan terranos just like kiwipete has on his.
kinda want to prevent an issue if it happens again offroad somewhere.....

Carry a spare one.
Try adjusting your driving style a bit.
They are a weak link in the steering system. There are different thickness shafts in the idlers so try track down one with a thicker shaft. They can be be rebushed but that doesn't help if you have bent the shaft.
There is another current thread about the idlers,

Yeah I'm really easy on it when I'm on the rough stuff, it is after all my daily driver.
I've tried to replace anything that looks remotely old in the suspension, gotta buy what I can before I get a house
Cheers for the link

I'm on my 5th idler for my 94 surf in 2yrs and the latest one has lasted the longest from coastal auto approx $110, all from different suppliers and 2 second hand ones from earlier models.
Quite a good writeup for a brace here if you have the gear

I'm pretty certain you would need to remove it for WOFs though.

gave toyota a call earlier, and they dont list different shaft sizes as such. its possible that an idler off another truck will be adifferent size, but they dont list any sizes against their part numbers :(
maybe a stopper is the best way to takcle it unless someone has a better idea?
