Pros and Cons of coil spacers

Post by vitz »

Hi Guys

I have been looking for the best way to lift my Vitara 30mm.

There are quite a few options with springs, (cobra, kings, lovels, ect....)
All are quite expensive and very hard to get 2 people to agree on how much lift they actually give and weather or not it makes them drive better or worse on and off road.

So I have been thinking of coil spacers.

15mm in front and 30mm in rear, which will give an even 30mm lift.

Question is, what are the pros and cons of coil spacers? And what are the best coil spacers?

Also, while we're here. Does anyone know of 30mm longer rear shocks, rather than the 50mm longer commy ones.

Look forward to your answers

Not too sure on the pro's an con's of spring spacers, all i can say if your going too go down the road of spring spacer you should seriously consider doing the other half of the job an get some shock spacer's...

In my opinion bit4vits have the best spring spacer around an can also previod shock spacer's front and rear too, i think from memory there spring spacer give's 1.5 inch of lift or 38mm which ant much really.

Be best if you do the same height lift or spacer all round or it will look uneven with less lift in the front as you suggested with the 15mm for the front. Just a suggestion

I agree that bits4vits have the best spring spacers. Theirs are shaped to the coil at the top. I have those and the extra spacers they sell on top. Works well. Fts have good 3" springs, I just fitted some to the back, and am waiting on the front ones to arrive.

Obviously coil spacers limit travel as they can not be compressed. If it is just lift that you want, then fine. If you want travel then springs are the way to go.

The low range strut spacers work well for me.

Fts have longer struts that have some camber correction in them. They have the longest travel available.

Rear shocks, you can use vl commodore ones, but measure the distance required to keep the spring captive, and make sure the shock is matched to that otherwise no cert. Low range off road have lots of different shocks in different lengths, and you can choose the right one for you to suit your rear set up.

Might need to think about putting in 5 door handbrake cables.

I have some c33 laurel springs and vl shocks to sell if you are interested, but the shocks have a lot of travel. Pm me if you want.

The front springs cantilever part-way along the control arms so you DO need to have different height spacers to achieve the same amount of lift. From memory just over half the height you use for the rear works well.

Datsun 1200 rear shocks are a perfect fit for 30-40mm of extra travel in the rear according to a parts distributor I was talking to the other day, haven't tryed yet tho, any1 els had a go with these??

No, but I use shocks out of a Ford Capri and while they give over 50mm longer travel, compressed length is only about 25-30mm from memory, which means they will work fine for 30mm lift, They're valved nice and soft too so let the rear work well.
