Do Not  cruiser diffs not strong enough?

I meant that disco owners head down the weak diff path as soon as they start modifying ie bigger wheels, not that cruiser diffs are weak 8)

I was hanging out for some free time as I knew I'd need to chop the guards a bit more to fit the Siverstone 33s.

Well, today I managed to throw them on. I didn't have anywhere I could give it a decent flex....but I attacked the guards with the angle grinder in anticipation of needing to do so :-)

Scary stuff...especially hacking into doors....but I kept telling myself I just needed some clearance for the time-being. Eventually I'll get some nice flares to tidy everything up.

So here's the result....hacked to pieces guards and shiny new Silverstones. Can't wait to get muddy!

heh. I think i did ok. Need to drive up something big and rocky and awesome around town in the next few days just to test flex for sure though. I trimmed the doors following one of the bends....so it was easy. It will be tougher if i need to trim more that's for sure.

I was in Nelson over the weekend and tried SO hard to get my missus to let me bring home another identical disco (dereg'd only $1000) just as a spare. Then I'd have a whole trucks worth of spares! If only i had a shed to keep stuff like that in and didn't live in the city

Ice, you'll have to let me know next time you're taking the rover out in the HB. I'd be keen for a mission down to explore some new tracks!!

The NZ4WD magazine is currently running a series on cutting and fitting flares on a Discovery. Lots of photos as well.

Finally found some time to put on the new heavy duty steering rod... Relocated the steering damper to the front while I was at it

Completely guesses the alignment by eye and then took it for an alignment.... None needed! Turns out my guess work was 100% spot on!

Off for work this weekend but hopefully I get back in time on Sunday to head out and watch the land rover club tackle pig farm in reverse! Should make for some interesting obstacles :-)

The spending continues....

Went for a decent play at Woodhill with the Land Rover club. It was my first time back since the steering rod breakage...so I was determined to take it easy and just try and get out without breaking anything else. All went well until half way through the day I parked up and found a giant puddle of steering fluid under the car. Turns out a seal on the steering box had disintegrated and topping it up just poured straight out again. So the day was cut short and I made my way out the forest old-school style - with no power steering.

The steering box was a bit rough since I bent the steering rod...so perhaps I damaged it then. Monday was a trip to Brett at Top of the Range for a second hand power steering box...much better now.

Here's some video of Bruce Banner (my truck's name - get it?) before the steering fail:

the worst part about this first video? I made it through first time no worries! and then failed three times for the camera!

Then you think i'd be happy....but ever since putting on the set of Silverstone 33s and trimming the guards to suit I've been unhappy with the look of my tiny 265 Kumhos...So...an impromptu trip to Motortech 4x4 and here is Bruce with his new set of 33inch Bighorns. Much better for a daily driver!

Flares are coming...i have some rubber ones sitting there waiting....the problem now?......my 33 10.5 silverstones are now feeling a tad small..............

Hey team,

Figured it was time for a little bit of an update. I've been overseas for work for the past three months. Just got home last week and fired up Bruce for a bit of a run and WOF.

He flew through last time. This time was OK but they were less enthusiastic. Passed....but there was a few things they we're a bit sketchy on.

I actually failed on uneven front brakes. I took the truck to the shop and ALMOST paid big bucks to have the front brakes redone. Then I called John Harvey from the LROCA. John told me the calipers were probably just a bit seized/sticky from sitting. So he advised me to take it for a blast. Brake like crazy and heat everything all up. I found a great hill and just braked like crap up and down it for half an hour. Bingo - even brakes again! Love the simple solutions :-)

Went for a play in Woodhill yesterday. Took it easy....good fun day.

That's all. It's good to be back in NZ!

Alex
