can be done, they are gutless slugs, but if it has factory size tires/rims manual, engine in good condition, driven like it was designed for not like a race car id say yes, maybe even 11's.

Be lucky, i drive 35km round trip to work in my 2.8 lux on 31s it returns 7-8km to a litre so if i figured it out right 14l to 100km?!

I drive a 1989 Hilux, 2,8 non turbo single cab ute, extractors, injectors serviced, oil and filter changed and new diesel filter on 31 inch muds and get a little over 12 litres per 100k, round trip 50 kms to work.
The only way I could see a surf with the same motor getting 10 litres per 100km would be to turbo its (improves power and economy) smaller road tyres and a very flat, if not downhill run with a tailwind.

10l/100km is quite possible.
my old hiace did that and roughly the same with that engine in the surf tho its now turbo'ed.
but the big thing is the driver. a poor driver will always use much more fuel.

I had a 2.8 hilux on 33's and it was getting 14.5 litres per 100 kms.... when I was running 31's it was getting 12 litres per 100 kms. That was with fresh oil and additives.... I don't think a surf would be too much different as it will have the aerodynamics of a brick also....

Jeeez guys really !!!!!!! thats about as economical as my Jeep, I get about 14 to 15 ltrs / 100 km on my 33s depending on how heavy the boot is and how late for work i am, and 12 to 13 ltrs / 100km on my 31s all terrains driving roughly the same, was looking at a 2.8 lux but not so sure now, yay get to keep the Jeep, and I don't have to buy ks and more expensive rego, can't wait to tell her indoors about this.

To do 1,000 km in a diesel ute at 12 litres per 100km the costs are
RUC $48
Diesel 120 x $1.38 $166
Reg (assume 20,000km per year) $590/20 $29
Total $243
To do 1,000km in a petrol vehicle (non ute) at 12 litres per 100 km
RUC $Nil
Petrol 120 x $1.91 $229
Reg (assume 20,000km per year) $280/20 $14
Total $243
At 14 litres per 100 km the figures change to diesel ute $271, petrol non ute $281
It then comes down to do I really need a ute (for me with a lifestyle block its dam handy) or do I need power and speed (been there and wrote the bike off so slow is good)

Never worked it out for my shitters, but one of my guys is getting 9.5 out of a 6.0ltr Maloo. Mind you every time I drive it is more like 99.99 per hundred, but if it gets pussy footed about, the thing returns 12-14 per 100 quite happily (according to it's own computer).

You can just throw the conversion straight into google and it will do it for you eg. "5l/100kms in mpg"
