Haha the fact that this LR has been built mainly from R.E.X parts is highly concerning then

I set timing to 4deg advance at 1500rpm or there about. Will have to re-time it now that the engine has been freshened up.

I actually lifted the engine mounts up 1" while the engine was out to give a bit more clearance between the oil filter and the diff head.

Just thought perhaps the viscous fan won't hit the bottom radiator outlet anymore

Its getting the engine and box back in over the next four days so will soon find out.

Definitely not.
The LT95 gearbox has an internal pump and needs a lighter oil.
Land Rover state engine oil such as 15w/50 or 20w/50.
Same for the transfer case.

The more research you do the more conflicting information you will find .
Not 100% about the LT95 but most LR gearboxes of that era are recommended to run Dextron III ATF ....
I have issues putting ATF or engine oil in a gear box , so I opted to run Redline MTL in my LT-77 , as it is nice and thin , but is still a gearoil with good shear strength , but expensive .

However all the research I have done says to put standard 80/90w in the transfer case .

I wouldn't be to concerned using 20w/50 in everything initially, as I expect I will give the gearbox, transfer and overdrive an additional oil change after 500km which gives me a chance to assess the engine oil's performance.

I have never used the Redline MTL. Looking quickly at the specs I would say its more suited to the later 5-speed LT77 gearbox rather than your LT95. Big difference between the two gearboxes and the recommended oil used in each.

What I quoted earlier is the recommended lubricants direct from Land Rovers own literature for the LT95 gearbox. The rating depended on the brand of oil.
The LT95 is a little unique in its own way with the type of 'pump' inside. Too heavier oil and it won't pump it around cold and struggles when warm.

The original owners handbook states (amongst others) the following for both gearbox, overdrive and transfer case;
BP Visco-static 20-50
Castrol GTX
Mobil Super 15w/50
Havoline motor oil 20w/50
Shell super multigrade 20w/50.

Well after I found out that these boxes have an oil pump. I also found out they have an oil filter / gauze.

And what should I find in it but this 1/4inch broken off at about 1" pin. At the same time as finding this, the gear selector has jammed.



I think after 4 or so years, with countless hours and $ spent, to go for a handful of drives, I am seriously considering parting it out.

I think I might need to buy a temporary 4wd to drive around in for the meantime...

Hi I happen to have a spare lt95 which I am going to cut bell housing down to make a chev adapter also I will use input shaft for alignment etc so I reckon there will be some internals you may be able to use if you pm me with your details I am in porirua .
Also I used to used mobil 1 in my old 110 lt95 and it did not seem to thin out when hot , box did 150 ks on worn bearings before noise got the better of me and I reconditioned and was still going 40ks later with mobil 1 cheers nick

Due to the fact that I purchased a Subaru Brumby 4wd ute for my daily driver at about 10pm.

I identified the peice of metal in the LT95 one hour after the fact and it couldn't be more simple to replace. Will throw up some details tonight.

I also have the LT95 shifting again, this was due to me being a muppet and removing the gearstick while it was in reverse and not putting it back into the correct slot. Realised this after I whipped the top cover off.

I also threw a magnet down there and didn't find any other surprises.

So, it is full steam ahead with the LR

I have 3 LT95 gearboxes here in different states, 1 complete and 2 with centre diff's gone but the rest pretty much complete.

Well I'm managed to find all my tools after throwing them around

Bolted the boss kit on and attached the new steering wheel





And I picked up some rated shackles for $12 each at the Waitati rally



Nice simple jobs where nothing much could go wrong

Well the LR smokes and makes noise again.

Had an issue with the oil pressure relief valve plunger installed backwards, over-pressured everything and popped rubber oil hose off my engine oil cooler. Managed to spray oil onto the roof

Turned the plunger around and it fired up nice and rattely, next stage is to get the radiator in, new oil pressure guage , fix a leak in my clutch line connections - may need re-flared, slap some floor panels in and take the old bitch for a drive to pump up the lifters and run the Cam in.

15minutes of drive time and the Lifters have pumped up and everything seems to be quieting down.

Gearbox makes sounds like it out of a 1980's truck that's seen its fair share of towing but but still has some life left. All the gears select well. Reverse works which is more than can be said for the deceased auto.

Planning to go for a longer drive this weekend to see if it will hold together for longer periods of time...

It is difficult to say because of a change to a manual gearbox at the same time.

It does seem to like a few more revs.

I haven't let it idle yet as I'm told you should keep the rev's up while the cam is running in to keep it well lubricated. Apparently it is going to have a noticable idle...

I have postponed my longer test drive until next weekend because I decided to get this wheel allignment done first.

Should have more of an idea how much of a difference it has made after a good drive.

So a series 2a speedo cable is the one you want if you want to connect an LT95 gearbox to a 2a speedo. Connects straight up

Going to GPS the speedo this weekend then send it away for calibration. Just need to get name of the place. Think it was somewhere in Christchurch.

One more oil leak out the back of the overdrive to try fix up/reduce before this weekend.

Also noticed after tuning / leaning out the engine, its much harder to start because the all the cold start fuelling is based on the VE table (which is what you tune when it is warm).

So need to increase the cranking pulses, afterstart enrichment and warmup enrichment in the MSII. Takes a bit of trial and error...

Thanks for that link wjw. Called the place, need to figure out the difference at 30, 60 and 90km/hr and will cost around $50 to calibrate it.

Made up a driveshaft loop tonight. Ready for paint.

Hey Guys,

My LT95 front driveshaft output flange has some surface rust causing pitting which I think is the cause of an oil leak out of the front of the transfercase directly onto the exhaust

Tried to clean it up with some 800grit wet & dry with no sucess.

Does someone know of a company in dunedin that could put a stainless steel sleave on my existing one?
